Description:

ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington...

ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

It's in the hills on the edge of the city with a free collection and return if you want it from the i-centre. Parking there too. Also accessible from the hop on/off tour by arrangement. Cafe, toilets and shop. Entry fee is justified. Some drinking water points inside the fenced grounds. Wheelchair access via main paths. The fence has kept... More

If bird life, conservation, walking, natural bush is your thing, then this is the place for you. There are so many tracks to suit every walker that anyone could have a marvellous time in this amazing place. And the bird life is such a treat. The first time I went in the daytime and managed to tick off every bird... More

A great days adventure, but not for the faint hearted as walking is a lot more than stated. Well informed guides with oodles of knowledge. Beautiful settings for some rare species of birds and animals.

We three were enthralled with Zealandia. Maybe it had too many extinct breed explanations, but it is a marvel. Quite compact, yet unbelievably instructive as to the flora and fauna of the islands. You can get a free shuttle at the top of the cable car ride. Worth your time and money if you are into the outdoors and are... More

On trips I try to get out into the countryside. This would normally involve many hours of travel. For some strange reason this sanctuary is only a 10 minutes from the center of Wellington CBD. I don't know how this happened but Wellington is very lucky. There are many sanctuaries that are nothing more than large cages. This is a... More

On entering the gates it was like entering Jurassic park, looking at all the trees and water you could imagine Dinosaurs roaming through this heaven of lush green vegetation. For me an English man abroad it was a real treat to see untouched greenery. We saw Gecko's Parakeets, Tui's (to English people this is a very noisy bird, but beautiful)Herons... More

Did this day tour with my husband .we did it on a shore excursion on a cruise .Started the tour with a brief film then a history of the sanctuary.Taken around with a guide who was very knowledgable. Tour itself was good although our stay was only a couple of hours due to time restriction...you could easily spend all day... More

Wow, what a beautiful sanctuary in the middle of the city. The native bush walk is one of the best we have enjoyed in New Zealand and the wildlife we were able to get up close to was astounding. We were able to see at least five different tuataras in their native habitat .Fantastic. Also numerous beautiful native birds such... More
