We passed this place on the road and decided to go back a little later. We were glad we did as we found it all very interesting. We learnt all about thermal activity and the line of volcanoes down New Zealand. We enjoyed the earthquake simulator and making the displays move. You need a good hour here.

My partner and i actually loved how bad this was. One of the best features was when you push a button and a whole lot of tiny lights go on. For an idea of how fun this is turn your bedroom light of and on 13 times, congratulations you have experienced an equally thrilling time as the volcanic activity centre

Lots of reading and information. My kids though young, enjoyed the earthquake simulator and the displays. Good to visit on a wet day!

Lots of interesting information about the local mountains and area. My son enjoyed the activities & we all got quite a shock in the earthquake simulator.

I think the idea is great and I learnt some many interesting facts about the area and volcanoes. Watching a real time seismograph is a really unique experience. The cinema was great, but the movie about Chrch was shocking. The lady at the counter was nice and stayed open longer as there were still visitors wondering around. It`s really not... More

This was a side trip on a very wet day, and was well worth the visit. Our children found it fascinating and informative (aged 6 & 7) and the adults almost all came out in tears after watching the documentaries on the various earthquake and volcano disasters. The displays are a very interesting read, and the there are some basic... More

So much to read and understand, it would need much more time than we had to cover all the information. Some really good examples of how geysers and volcanoes are formed, and the movies are quite emotional to watch, especially the devastation in Christchurch after the earthquake and aftershocks experienced there.

Love the idea of volcanos and learning about them so this place was such a disappointment. The activity centre consists of 2 rooms and the exhibits were poor, repetitive, badly organised, old and antiquated. eg push the button and the light on the map table comes on showing where the volcano is ... This may have been state of the... More
