We enjoyed the earthquake simulator, but the actual centre could do with a face lift. LOTS of written information if you're interested in reading about lots of history, but probably a bit on the boring side for a family with small children.

This is an interesting interactive centre around the volcanic region but expensive for what it is. If you are going to National Park or Te Papa in Wellington or The Museum in Auckland then do those instead. Much cheaper (often free).

Thought this would be far more interactive. Needs updating. The cinema was freezing. Unfortunately would not be interesting enough for children. The gentleman whom we paid was very friendly.

There isn't much to do in Taupo on a rainy day, so I decided to give this place a try, given all the volcanic activity in the area. The museum is very small--essentially one room--and, even having read most of the material, I only spent perhaps a half hour here. Most of the exhibits are simply posters, which do give... More

We visited here in March 2015. We were excited to visit as the last time we had been here they had been shut due to a power cut. We were very disappointed. Many of the exhibits were broken, and those that were working were very outdated. Quite a number of the lights weren't working making it difficult to read the... More

Our first day in Taupo and it rained! What could we do but find an indoor activity to do. For only $12 per adult we spent about 1.5hrs here and learnt lots about earthquakes and volcanoes. Take the time to read the info boards and play with the interactive parts too. We enjoyed it

We visited the volcanic activity centre on a misty and murky day which rather added to the atmosphere of the place. A very interesting walk with plenty of info available.

At 12 bucks it's slightly over priced and quite dated. That said I learned a bit about lake taupo and white island and enjoyed the videos about past and recent earthquakes in NZ. The earthquake simulation is also a good talking point. However buttons on exhibits to illuminate lights on a map went out with the 80s and this badly... More

It's a bit dated and some things don't work anymore, but there's a lot of information about volcanic areas. I enjoyed the lake Taupo more after knowing what's really is.

As previous reviewers have commented, this is very much an educational activity with lots of reading of complex terminology so probably less for kids and more for adults. Saying that, our children (7 & 9 yr old girls) still found the place enjoyable. Videos were good.
