It's a simple drive from Taupo down the Thermal explorer highway towards Rotorua. But really close to the city and clear signs. The dam opened up at 10am, 12noon, 2pm everyday, (in summer: additional one at 4pm) so it's very likely you can fit it in your schedule and it only took 15-30mins (depending on your photo time). And you can... More

The dam is opened at 10, 12, 2, and (in summer) 4, and you're missing a neat show if you don't drive down from Taupo to watch it at least once. The entire sequence (opening, pool fills up, rapids get going, dam closed and rapids dry up) takes about 15 minutes. There is a good explanatory sign at the parking... More

It's free to go and see, and it's relatively easy to get to. Well worth watching when the water is released into the river as the spill gates are lifted. Water is released at 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm (4pm in summer only.)

You just have to watch this free spectacle! It's the Kiwi Niagara. I've now seen it from the road, from the first viewing point and the top viewing point. I enjoyed them all but the top point is nice and high and it's good to stretch your legs during the 5 minute walk up there. Before it starts, you just... More

Really worth going, amazing experience! It takes about 20/30 minutes for the river to fill. We went to the view point to watch the river fill and it was lovely. Doing it on a sunny day probably helped.

Worth stopping in to watch the daily release of water from the upstream dam. We watched from the power station just below the dam. Water slowly rose into a torrent, covering the entire rapids and streambed. Worth 20-30min of your time.

The water is let out of the dam several times a day to allow visitors to see a little of what the river looked like before it was dammed. When the water comes out of the dam it is a beautiful colour and it flows into an area which needs to fill before it the water can carry on its... More

It was great to watch the dam releasing its water and it is easy to make sure you catch it with the 10am, 12pm, and 2pm times. We walked to the lookout point (mid-point) as my mother who is 88 may not have found the top climb easy. The force of the water was considerable and it was amazing to... More

If the timing is right, it is a good place to pay a visit to watch the dam releasing water to the river and how the river quickly filled up. It is free.

We timed our visit perfectly as the dam sluices had just been opened. This gave a us a chance to see the whole natural force of the Rapids. We walked up to the top lookout point which was week worth the reasonably steep climb, as the view of the Rapids is breathtaking. Whilst we wer up there the sluices were... More
