The Museum is not big, but offers a variety of different exhibits, information and art work from the region including fantastic Maori art. Really recommendable

There is a real Maori longboat to view really good. Also Maori skirts, tools art etc. There is also a lot of information of logging in NZ. There is also a Chelsea flower show winner from 2004 the Ora gardens. I found it very small and underwhelming.

This compact museum surveys the logging history of the area. It also features a whare (meeting house) and a waka, which I did not have time to fully explore, as my travelling companions were ready to move on. An art exhibition complements the historical exhibits--it focused on landscape photography when we visited. Be sure to take in the garden. We... More

great price $5 for adults and free for kids, - I wouldn't want to pay more though. A few exhibits which I found interesting - a waka which was huge, and i like the caravan from the 60s. Kids seemed to enjoy it.

Taupo has literally been at the centre of North Island life for hundreds of years. The museum brings to life the earliest days of Maori occupation, the incredible volcanic forces that shaped the area (the third Taupo eruption turned the sky red in China), early European influences, travel, forestry, farming and fishing, through to the present day. Great local museum. Lots of interesting things to see and read about.Very peaceful with lovely staff who were very helpful. The rose garden next to the museum was wonderful. The colours and scents were exquisite. It made for a peaceful break from the crowds of people on the fore shore.

It's not large. In fact, it's tiny, but they pack a lot in. Great displays, great information and cute garden. Best $5 spent so far. The Maori display is probably the best I've seen.
