Climbing Mt. Tarawera is a MUST! I went with Kaitiaki Adventures (the only way to get to the summit) and they were nothing short of phenomenal. The guides were knowledgeable about the natural and cultural history surrounding the mountain, the eruption and Maori lore. The view from the top was awesome, you could see all the way to Tongariro and... More

Mt Tarawera may have grumbled a few times over the years but has remained fairly subdued since the eruption in 1886 which buried Te Wairoa that night. Pretty cold this time of the year but the carparks are full of boat trailers indicating that the fishing is still good! Wonderful views..

we took 20 boys up to the summit on a cold and windy, but sunny day. The guides were well organised and knew how to deal with large groups- and especially school trips. Full of humor, but safe and sound- would recommend to others. Running into the crater was highlight, but so were the views- awesome.

A great 4 hour trek from Tarawera carpark to hot water beach where you can take a water taxi back the landing. Make sure you book your water taxi prior to walking and give yourself plenty of time to get to hot water beach. You can soak your feet after the walk and also soak up the views of Mt... More

We went for a walk around the lake and saw the trout teasing the fisher man who were fishing in the lake, the trout were coming down the river behind them which was prohibited for fishing, and they were turn around and scoot back. Was rainy but so beautiful,

We started out from Wai O Tapu area , walking thr Waimangu thermal area, camped on Lake Tarawera overnight and hit the mountain the next day. Really steep workout up the scoria slope. Fantastic views of the crater and the lakes from the top. enjoy the down part by 'sking' the scoria. Have good boots and prepare for windy conditions.

Loved the history and location. The views are stunning. Worth the effort to get to this location. Connect this with a tour of the Buried Village.

We have been coming to Tarawera for the last few years. It is worth a visit. Not far from Rotorua. You can go down to the landing where there a couple of very short walks to see ancient cave drawings or see the trout swimming. Otherwise you can drive a bit further to boat shed bay for another short walk.... More

Nice offroad drive to the top, after a short walk you have a beautiful view over the Plateau and you can even See white Island . You also go into the crater and walk trough. The guides are really nice and we had fun time. All in all it was a great trip!
