One of the worlds best kept secrets if your into nature, hiking, water sports and lake fishing for trout or just chilling out! Amazing scenic locations around the lake and through walking tracks. Very friendly local residents. Food truck and cafe locations with good quality food. Explorers paradise away from most mass tourists. We will rent a house on/near lake... More

If you are heading out to the Buried Village it is worth driving on afterwards to Lake Tarawera. It is not too far away and you can follow the road until it ends. At the first turn off you head down to the lake and there is a nice area for kids to play on the lake shore. As well... More

The hike up was not easy but worth the effort as we were rewarded with wonderful views along the way and especially so at the summit. We went with Kaitiaki Adventures as no one is allowed to go to the top of the mountain on their own. We were picked up at our hotel and driven to pretty high up... More

Kylie looked so young but she knew how to navigate the 1954 Otter float plane across the lakes and over the crater and we took great photos.

we drove to the lookout just along from the Buried Village and it was worth the drive. We got amazing photos of Mt Tarawera across the lake. Lovely.

We lived here for over eight years but we still love to visit the area. It can offer a superb time to the family for all waterborne activities, including swimming, fishing, boating, walking etc.etc. plus beautiful peace and quiet if you prefer that. The spend budget depends on you entirely, from absolutely nothing to flights over the mountain - it... More

It was amazing! Throughout the walk you stop at different lookouts to learn about the mountain. The walk isn't very hard a few ups and downs you would expect on a mountain but it's so worth the view. Once you get to the top and come to the edge of the crater, that's when the fun begins! There's no going... More
