We were able to observe an erupting geyser - its show lasts about 20 minutes, and it erupts about once per hour. The center has some typical Maori buildings, and we learned how they make ceremonial skirts from the fibers of palm fronds. There are also some quality art items available for purchase.

Culture is important to understand; and it is neat to see money directly from tourism supporting a cultural cause.

If I am looking for good quality Maori Arts and Crafts souvenirs in the north island this is the place to visit. If the staff dont have what you want they can put you in touch with someone who can. To understand how much time and effort is put into producing maori arts and crafts this is the place to... More

Very interesting tour with excellent guide. Usually visit Whaka village so first time on this side of geyser. Live kiwi shed was good value, and craft centre open and interesting. Cultural show cost extra which was disappointing as should be included with access price. Whaka side probably has edge if choosing between the two.

We arrived around 6pm at the Maori village and had a great display from the Maori people before entering their village which was a great insight to way of life the Maori people once lived, Their houses, the games they played (for fitness), foods and how they cooked them under ground, their carvings and crafts, it was both fascinating and... Located at the entrance to Te Puia (Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve). If you do the Te Puia guided tour, the tour ends here with free time to wander around and watch the students at work creating traditional wood carvings and flax weaving. The New Zealand Maori Arts and Craft Institute is home to the National Weaving School and the National... More

We were blessed on our visit to this centre by the allocation of a Maori lady guide who had some Scottish ancestry and a lovely gentle but cheeky sense of humour. The centre comprises woodwork and weaving workshops and displays of their labours. We were treated to a lesson in making rope from papyrus (using my wife's leg) but the... More
