Experience an evening of ceremonial ritual, powerful cultural performance, storytelling & hangi feasting. Share in the Powhiri, our ancient ceremony of welcome before entering our pre-European Maori Village nestled within a native Tawa Forest. The village comes alive with sights, sounds & activity of days gone by including haka, poi, tattooing, weaving, carving and arts of warrior training. You will have the opportunity to participate in these activities. Witness the earth being scraped away from the hangi pit to reveal baskets of food cooked beneath the ground on hot stones. Unfortunately it was raining we I went but that didn't stop these amazing people! The opening ceremony was an event not to be missed and the food that was cooked traditionally under the ground was awesome. The insight into how the Maoris lived many years ago and their struggles was both touching and insightful. When in Rotarua you must go

This was a great experience from beginning to end. Our driver's name was Kairo and he was most informative and great fun to be with. Full marks. The meal was wonderful and the concert and cultural information could not have been any better. The experience has only made it more essential that we return to New Zealand in the near... More

This is as awesome experience. Full of information and very friendly staff. The information starts at the main gathering point, were you get a back ground on different aspects including how it started, very interesting. The bus trip out to the Maori village is by no means boring the bus drivers are part time comedians. The village experience kicks off... More

I vistited the Maori Village just a short drive out of Rotorua in October 2014. I was a unique and entertaining cultural experience and I'd recommend it to everyone who is travelling throughout New Zealand! Ceremony with the chief's greeting (hongi), introduction, welcoming, then you get to see different traditions such as the haka (traditional dance), women's practices and games,... More

My wife and I try and do something cultural every trip we go on and this is by far and away the best. Completely interactive and you really do get to see a side of Maori life that you wouldn't normally get to see. They teach you how to do the haka. Hangi feast was yum. Highlight of the tour... More

My travelk agent recommended we visit the Tamaki Village and I am so glad we did. What a wonderful evening of cultural education and entertainment. The Maori people are truly warm, fun and proud people. Even the bus driver Kahu who collected us from our hotel was a delight. The feast laid out after the interactive cultural lessons was magnificent.... More

My wife and I have visited many countries and have seen a variety of local cultural shows. They have been interesting but the Tamaki Maori experience is well above the norm. I would place it at 11 on a scale of 1 to 10. It starts with the bus driver that picks you up for the hotel with his typical... More

Well, of course this is a touristic thing and it is impossible to visit a 100% maori village (I think!). Guys and girls had fake tattoos and were using earrings, but this does not reduce the importance of this experience. You must go to understand more about maori history, their characteristics and traditions. Societies change, but at this place you... More
