We can HIGHLY recommend the Hells Gate Thermal Walk / Mud Bath / Spa. This was a real highlight of our trip to Rotorua and we experienced the history of Maori habitation of the region some 800 years ago. If you're fortunate enough to have Adrian as your tour guide, you won't be disappointed. What this guy knows about his... More

See volcanic activity, hearing boiling mud, putting your feet in a mud pool, making Maori carvings and actually having your own mud bath are all experiences to be had at Hell's Gate - I did all of this apart from the mud bath (additional cost). We went on a small guided tour which was extremely informative - there were only... More

This was quite interesting. Nice guide and it was cool & just stopped raining. Good walking path over bridges and viewing areas. Our guide had lots of great native stories and was a good speaker, made the walk and talk more interesting. Oozing mud from holes and lots of rising steam, bubbling and plopping going on. Fissures and cracks in... More

This is a not-to-be-missed attraction if you're in Rotorua. We had a superb Maori guide, who really enjoyed our interest and enthusiasm. Hell's Gate is indeed from another world - we walked on a path and saw bubbling, as in from Hell, sulfuous mud and water. I was very glad to have a guide, as he pointed out much I... More

This place is amazing and like another world. We got here in time for a guided tour and was awesome. I think had we done it on our own there would've been a lot of things we would've missed.

There may well be lots of other attractions in Rotorua but this was easily accessible (by car) and well signposted with good parking. Went on a Sunday and not many people which was great. We did the walk around the park which was fabulous and extremely interesting for all ages - like a lunar landscape and only takes about 30... More

I love it when i don't have to join a big tour with lots of people. in Hell's Gate you can make a self-guided tour and see a lot of cool things, even hold your hands in the spa mud and learn how to woodcarve.

We had not visited Hell's Gate for years, but holidaying in the area decided after probably 40 years to give it another go. We are local and have seen different thermal areas many times and often wonder why we have to pay.....but this area has to be maintained and kept safe, which it is. there's lots to see and do....
