I had a couple of hours before my flight and found Hells Gate. Very lucky here. Not sure how I had missed this attraction, but enjoyed my walk through as much as most if the other thermal attractions. Several very unique features including a 104 degree waterfall, and the option to use their thermal spa, mud baths etc. next time... More

We visited with Canadian family and found the presentation of the region, while preserving the natural nature of the terrain and thermal features, to be very well done. Surely those complaining about the smell had some rudimentary knowledge of the nature of the thermal activities? We did not find the smell to be too bad at all, and I had... More

My husband and I visited Hell's Gate as part of our honeymoon, and really enjoyed it. It gives you a good close-up view of thermal pools, and some information about how hot they get and the history behind some of the names. The walking path gives ample photo opportunities. We also had a mud bath, which was quite touristy and... More

We were staying in Rotorua and the Black Swan Hotel staff recommended we come here. The service was great and the staff were very knowledgable and we had a really good time bathing in the mud and then the sulphur pools. I definitely prefered the sulphur to the mud though. Will definitely come here again!

Returned with a new visitor to Hells Gate, and it was great to see that there was work to enhance the attraction, without taking away from the natural landscape. While the smell to some can be overpowereing, we didn't find it so, but the fact that there was places that you could try some things (the foot mud bath and... More

Visited here with my family of 8 adults and 1 toddler. The people at the front entrance were very nice and welcoming. We just did the walk around the hot springs and found it to be very interesting. There are little plaques with information about the certain springs. The smell is very overpowering but once you get over it, it's... More

This was a highlight of our trip to Rotorua. We had never had a mud bath and the idea was intriguing. The staff were very good at explaining how to take the mud bath. Each party has its own warm water pool. There is a bin of very fine mud which is applied to the skin. We were advised to... More

I hate writing bad reviews for national parks but we left regretting our visit to Hell's Gate. The reviews looked good so we opted for the walk and rejuvenating mineral bath. First of all, the smell was horrific! I was miserable and felt sick throughout the entire tour of the geothermal area. There is a lot of geothermal activity but... More

This is a very pleasant experience. The warm mud is fine and left our skin feeling soft and smooth and sitting in the warm pool afterwards is relaxing. Note that it is best to wear older swim wear for this since, although it washes out, it will take on a distinctly grey appearance immediately after the session in the bath.... More

I'm glad we won a family pass to go here for the mud bath and spa. I would have been fuming if I paid for it! What other travellers have written about the smell latching to other clothes not even worn is 100% correct! Can't get the smell out of our togs, management responses on previous posts suggest cloudy ammonia... More

Kia Ora Melissa, Congratulations on winning the family pass to Hells Gate and thank you for taking the time to review your mud bath and spa experience. My apologies that you missed the signs regarding our recommendations for cloudy ammonia and also the tarnishing of silver jewelry, these are at the front reception and also in our spa rules which...
