My partner and i went to hells gate for the spa & massage package firstly, it has to be said, the place has a very strong sulphur smell (like a rotten egg) it is quite much at first, however you do get used to it. the private mud bath was so relaxing and the traditional maori massage was to die... We started off the afternoon with a walk around the geothermal park. Very quickly you understand why it was given the name of 'Hell's Gate', as you truly feel like the earth could just open up and swallow you whole at any moment. Powerful displays of bubbling mud pools and beautifully coloured mineral pools. Not crowded at all, which makes... More

The park was in stark contrast to Waiotapu. It was mostly white and just rocks and steaming pools. Wasn't as big and diverse as Waiotapu. The best thing there was the "inferno". Also tried the mud bath spa. Spent 20 mins smearing mud all over ourselves and then sat in the sulfur springs for another 30 mins. I did notice... More

It was a different experience compared my walk in Whakarewarewa & Wai-O-Tapu. We enjoyed the thermal area walk and the pool. The area was big and not many people around - in fact we met only few more people there. The thermal mineral pool was superb. It was a kind of green & yellow colour but the quality of water... More

Sampled the mud spa and mineral spa after, this is so relaxing. After the treatments was spent for the day. Next time I would do it... More

The volcanic view was cool and you can actually take a nice walk along it. but I have to say it was a bit let down for the mud bath. shower and changing rooms is a let down feel no privacy and not enough toilet. plastic box to carry your own belonging. shabby unlike what they advertise but it's still... There are a ton of "volcanic & geo-thermal" type things to do in the Rotorua area. We saw brochures and ads for this place all over..... We liked the cool name: "Hells Gate" So we went. It was OK. Cool location and easy to get to. The high-lite was the mud bath. You should definitely do that, as it's a... More

My friend and I recently visited Hells Gate at twilight at the suggestion of our hotel. As we were in the area during the recent long weekend, we thought it would have been much busier than what it was! We had the mud bath to our selves and when it was time to go to the hot pools we bypassed... More

Visited Rotorua with my family. We booked a guided tour and I feel that we got a lot more in the guided tour than just venturing on our own. Our tour guide is one of the descendants of one of the chiefs that looked after the area in the past. The walking tour is 1.5 hour so make sure you... More
