We went as part of an organised tour. There were two coach loads plus individual guests but everything was so well organised that you did not feel part of a crowd. Our 'chief' and the rival group's 'chief' were challenged before being allowed to enter the area. The Maori people there gave us a real insight in to their culture,... More

This is about as close as you'll get to the Maori culture. The evening starts on the bus with the Maori coach driver explaining things & choosing 3 chiefs then we get to watch the traditional Maori greeting being acted out. Next up is a taste of different aspects of Maori life - basket weaving, warrior training, food, weapons etc.... More

Our first stop in New Zealand was in Rotorua where we were experienced a Hangi, which is to the Maoris what a Luau is to Hawaiians. The food is cooked in baskets which are set in pits between thermal heated rocks. In our case it was a pig. After dinner we were treated to a performance of native songs and... More

The tour of the Maori village where the culture is demonstrated was really interesting. We enjoyed learning the history of the Moari people. The traditional dinner cooked in the pit was excellent as was the signing and the dancing of traditional ways. I would highly recommend this event

If you want good interactive entertainment and food that is cooked the old fashion way, then don't miss this attraction. Even the bus driver who delivers you and returns you to your hotel is in on the entertainment. You can even be chief of a tribe for a few hours, but you will need to learn the Maori dance. It... Just a money spinner this one, so avoid. The meal was certainly no Hangi and of poor quality. The whole thing felt cheap and tacky. The show was certainly not polished and the $68 a head charge was a rip off. Guess we chose the wrong one to go to.....

The one thing that often grates on sensitivities when you are local to an area, is to see the over commercialisation of a tourism feature. It was very refreshing therefore when our guide from Amazing Day Tours, Irene, told us that this centre was the work of local tribal Maori groups, rather than a professional performing troupe. This difference provided... More

Brilliant place to spend a few hours. I think our guides name was Paul and he was excellent. The 'surprise' you get from the boiling water is a good added touch. Also kiwi house is great.

Loved seeing the kiwi, mouri art centres, hot geysers and mud pools. Excellent day. Definitely go on a tour and pay the extra 10 to see the cultural show....well worth it
