We spent three days based in Paihia; it was just after the end of the peak tourist season, so it was not too crowded and the restaurants and tourist operators were very welcoming! The ferry trip across to Russell is well worthwhile; we had an enjoyable, if somewhat windswept half day there. A very beautiful, relaxing harbour, with extensive foreshore... More

Beautiful coastline. Easy trip to Russell over the other side of the harbour. Swimming, fishing, boating or just sightseeing.

It is a paradise and you can see why early travellers decided to stay. Our only dislike is that we could not stay longer, or have that view every day.

We took the intercity ferry across to Russell and were treated to the rare view of Orcas (Killer Whales) hunting in a small pack. The closest we got to them was about 30 metres but the ferry captain told us that to see them in close like that was very rare on the ferry across to Russell. Word must have... More

Paihia is the gateway to the beautiful Bay of Islands. Several of the world's cruise liners call here, usually to enjoy the very pleasant small town and its open-air markets, but also to take short cruises around the islands, or the short ferry ride across to the attractive resort of Russell. My wife and I stayed in the town so... More

A nice little place which serves as the starting point for the cruises . One street town marked by souvenir shops and a few restaurants catering to lunch for hungry visitors doing the day trip from Auckland . The pier could do with better queue management. Restrooms need to be maintained properly.

Of course, every locale catering for a significant tourist market relies heavily on 'imported dollars' and you can rest assured that Paihai attracts a serious punch in this regard. Frankly, I made what may be construed by some as the right, and other the wrong, decision to stay 20 clicks up the road in Kerikeri, and to be honest, I'm... More

We took the cruise to hole in the rock. Dolphins, sheep, and general beauty. I would suggest the half day. A whole day seems like unneeded overkill.

It has a little public library in a phone booth that is very neat. A very good place to view sunrise as well.
