On March 29, 2013 our cruise ship arrived at the Paihia Wharf. After taking the ferry to Russell Wharf, we boarded the R. Tucker Thompson for a wonderful day. The morning started out cool so the scones with strawberry jam along with tea or coffee was a welcome treat. Those who wanted to be involved raised and lowered the sails... More

Our day on the Tucker Thompson was a highlight of our tour to New Zealand. The crew were helpful and friendly. This is a real sailing ship and and if you want to become involved you can pull up the sails, climb the rigging or steer the ship. This is a great way to see the Bay of Islands. A... More

What a great day!!! Sailing out into the Bay of Islands aboard a "real" sailing ship. Magnificent trip; great crew who instantly deserve my respect for knowing what all of the ropes do; opportunity to climb the rigging and walk out on the bowspirit (awesome); relaxing stop on one of the Islands for a swim; beautiful scenery and good company.... My famil (husband and two boys 7 and 9) had a great day sailing. The crew were very friendly and helpful and very encouraging. our boys loved helping put up the sails and riding the bow spit, especially when a pod of dolphins turned up. The food was great made by a very layed back Chef- Wayne, and you could... More

My Wife and I have our own yacht so we thought about chartering a yacht while we were in russel. However, when we arrived the weather wasn't great - force 7 winds, big swell and quite cold. So we decided to have a day out on the Tucker Thomson, as we had never sailed on a tall ship before. It... More

Kia ora from the sunny Bay of Islands and thanks for your review. It's great to hear about your experiences on a "bad weather" day as the ship really performs well under those conditions, probably a better sailing experience than the sunny calm days! Our crew head out on our first youth voyage today so thank you for your support. More

We had a fantastic day out sailing on what our six year old called "The Pirate Ship" The weather was perfect with enough wind for sailing, the crew were wonderful. It was great to be able to take part in sailing - from steering, to hoisting sails....so many ropes! The crew were very safety conscious so I had no worries... More

Had a truly wonderful day out. Great boat, fantastic crew and even the passengers were friendly. We went swimming, dining and generally sailing the beautiful bay of islands. Highly recommend it for a day out. Not an crammed full ship meant a feeling of exclusivity and the crew had time for everyone. Thanks R Tucker Thompson

We are so grateful to Tim and the crew for making our sailing day even happen. Coming into the Bay of Islands on the Queen Mary 2, we arrived 15 minutes too late for for the last ferry from Paihia. Sophie at the booking desk was quick to think of an alternative, and Tim took a slight detour and sent... More
