Description: Matakana Village and Matakana Farmers Market, one hour from Auckland...
Matakana Village and Matakana Farmers Market, one hour from Auckland. Close enough to visit, far enough to stay. On Saturday the vibrant farmers market is a focal point for the community and its growers to meet. Produce fills the stalls - fruit and vegetables, delicious home-baking and Italian-style sausages, divine organic chocolate, fine wines and boutique olive oils, locally-brewed beer, cafes and live music. Matakana is a unique mix. Rainbow Valley Farm is a world-famous model for permaculture. You'll find a riverside gallery next to the new cinemas, the best in contemporary literature just over the road from teahouse or cafe.

more than I thought

Must admit I thought there'd be very little there outside the farmer's market, but there was plenty to see, eat, shop, including some bloody good pies on the main street!

Such a nice place and a great range of produce and other items, and plenty to eat and drink. It's a nice setting and there are other excellent local shops nearby too which deserve a visit. The market closes at 1pm, we had let our lazy morning get the better of us and ended up missing half the fun.

I visited the markets with a friend on a Saturday morning. It was a nice morning out even with iffy weather. Grab a juice from the delicious juice bar - the green one tasted fantastic. Have breakfast there - the bacon and egg bap was pretty good! There is plenty of spray free vege and some fruit available to purchase... More

Lovely country orientated markets with plenty of quality stalls and great selection of foods. Very easy market to walk around, it is very interesting. I would highly recommend a visit.

Our first visit to Matakana Village and the much talked about Saturday morning Farmers Market. We made a call to be there around 9am and get in early and this was a wise decision, as parking was already more than full (we parked in a free space about 500m walk down the road) and the market was well and truly... Matakana Village is a gem. The Saturday market is full of life, fresh food, fresh tastes and has a buzz but the village is great at any time. The movie theatres are unique, the bookshop is of highest quality and has a good range and the specialty shops always yield something one wants to buy. A must see/do.

Even though people come from everywhere to the market on Saturday, it has a nice local feel to it. Usually music is playing and everyone is sitting and relaxing with food. Everything from green juices, fresh oysters, small plates and white bait fritters. Dogs not allowed in the 'market' area where half the food stores are. Although a dog-sitting service... More

The townsfolk of Matakana have transformed what was a sleepy town off the beaten track into a tourist destination with opportunities for tourists to indulge in what the town itself has to offer or to use it as a base to then explore the wineries and other tourist attractions/eateries in the area. The falls can be visited by venturing through... More

Nice market with some good food stalls, and a great stop off point when visiting the area. Interesting little shops as well as a cinema.
