This is a fantastic day out. The boat trip is in a very comfortable catamaran. We did not take the guided option on the Island but it was very easy to find our way around. Loved the bird song and saw most of the birds mentioned in the brochure - especially enjoyed seeing the Takahe near the light house This... More

This isn't really up my ally, but it did make me feel like being a bird watcher. Although I reverted back to my non-bird watching self once I retreated form the island, it was a fun role to play for a day.

All New Zealanders (especially Aucklanders) should take time away from city life to visit this magical island. I could not believe my eyes, and wish I had a better camera. Never saw the kokako, but many others did. Will go again whenever I get the chance!

Not to be missed if you love birdlife as this is a bird reserve, You take the relaxing ferry ride to this bird paradise. Be greeted by the incredible takahe's. See native penguins in their nests, recovering native species abound. Make sure you do not bring pests with you (mice/ rats with your luggage as it will destroy the island!).

The ferry leaves Gulf Harbour at 9.50 and leaves the island at 3.30 pm. It's a whole day activity. We did the coastal walk, had lunch at the light house area at 2 pm and walked back to the wharf along Wattle Track. The island is an open sanctuary for many endemic native birds, Tekahe, bell bird, north island robin,... More
