What a place, and so close to Auckland! I highly recommend staying the night in the Bunkhouse~ bookings made through the DOC website or the Whangarei Doc office. Kitchen fully stocked with everything from pots and pans to plates and wine glasses ;) very comfortable and warm. The island itself is teeming with with life~ saddlebacks, tuis, bell birds, and... A group of friends and I stayed overnight at the "bunkhouse" (book well in advance as it's very popular and the only place visitors can stay on the island). The visit did not disappoint - we spotted countless birds - from Saddleback to Penguins... even a curious takahe or two for good measure. Most members of the group saw kiwi... More

Well worth the overnight stay in the comfortable bunkhouse so that we could enjoy this island to ourselves once all the day-trippers had left. Kiwi spotting at night (successful for others but sadly not I), and a morning walk in the serene bush - just us and the birds - were definite highlights.

Plan a day trip to this little Island. It's full of birds. Plant some trees and visit the old and still active light house.

Fantastic little island in the gulf dedicated to a bird sanctuary. Take your picnic lunch, swimming togs, walking shoes and spend the entire day on the island. Truley a magical spot. There are heaps of birds to view along the bush walks.

We travelled to the island with overseas visitors and as usual the trip did not disappoint. My hubby and I last visited when our children were young, so there was heaps of tree growth and much more bird life to see. Found the guided walk very informative. The only down side for me, is that the walking tracks are not... More

This island is remarkable - it's been completely reclaimed with native birds and flora. Be sure to take a tour with a guide - they're all volunteers, and they'll keep your interest even if you're not a 'birder'. Be sure to do the walk on the 'other side' (East Coast Track, on the other side from the Ferry Dock). Start... More

Tiri (as called by the locals) is an Auckland treasure. Take a day trip & experience a wonderful Hauraki Gulf island, with gorgeous white sandy beaches, crystal clear water & a chance to get up & personal with some of NZs rarest birds. Don't tell too many people, it'll spoil it for those in the know !

My Mom and I visited Tiritiri for a day. We had the most clear and beautiful weather! The boat ride back and forth was calm and comfortable. Other travelers were friendly and made great conversation with us. When we got to the island they grouped just my mom and I with our own guide. Kathryn talked and showed us so... More
