There are lots of walks throughout the Waitakere Ranges. Check into the Visitor Centre and pick up a free map. You can wander for hours in the bush but do make sure that someone knows where you are. It is very peaceful and generally fairly quiet with not too many hordes also walking there.

Native forest within only 20 minutes of Auckland CBD. Wonderful tracks and walks through native bush, alongside streams and waterfalls. Go a bit further and explore the wild west coast at Piha and Karekare as well.

Fabulous views, reasonably demanding but not exhausting. from the car-park at the end of Te Ahu-Ahu road near Piha we walked first downhill to a couple of great lookout points above the Tasman Sea and then back up through the bush, accompanied by birdsong and butterflies.

The Waitakere ranges are a beautiful area. We drove through on our way to Piha, which is absolutely lovely and a hidden gem in the area. There were very few people there, so we had the beach to ourselves! Good food can be had from Blair's on the beach. We had Trevally fish and chips and it was excellent. The... More

Our friends' home is in the Waitakere Ranges and we spent a number of happy hours there in February. It is a truly remarkable area similar to a rain forest in many ways and the forestation is beautiful.

The sights are unbelievable we had a wonderful driver/ tour guide. The tour was arranged through Viator but I understand we could have book directly through Beach and Bushes Tours. We went to the beach, to the forest and the beginning of the Hillary Trail, we also saw a waterfall.

The drive is beautiful, and included a stop at Karekare waterfall which was just a short hike from the road, and definitely worth the hike. There were tree ferns of amazing heights, and we stopped at a black sand beach where we saw some surfers.

As Auckland residents we always take our overseas visitors to the Waitakere Ranges for the best views of Auckland and absolutely stunning bush walks. Go to the visitor centre first to get maps of the trails and a compulsory photo in the frame.
