This museum has many contrasting exhibits. I was rather surprised that the entrance was taken up with historical and modern designs - rather like the V&A in London. Then you find the Maori and Polynesian sections which are fascinating. One floor up there are good science exhibits and hands on stuff for kids, an excellent exhibition about volcanoes and a... While folks who have been to London, Paris or Washington might be used to bigger museums, the Auckland Museum is surprisingly good. Apart from a wide variety of items ranging from Maori to WWI, the museum also has an awfully good Maori show where you can see folks doing the Haka and other traditional ritual dances. Some of the shows... More

For a few hours I found the museum and I Asit all preparations for anzac day. Besides being an important mass of people was involved in this action, everything was very well organized and the manifestation of the day was impressive. The museum has more information about the history and culture of NZ

Three or more museums in one. It contains natural history (very dated presentations), aboriginal culture (good but not extensive), activities for children and an historical account of New Zealand's various war activities from the 1840's to the present. Why are al these diverse topics in the same museum? None of the exhibits are great and it seems to be a... More

This museum was OK. Great natural history displays, the people history was lacking a bit and as another reviewer mentioned, it is a mishmash of stuff. It was a little pricey for what you get I think. But a beautiful location with nice views and we walked there from downtown Auckland. Note to travelers - they do not allow you... More

A must do in New Zealand, helps you embrace the culture and gain respect for their heritage. A very large museum, lots of information but it is kept interesting.

The Maori and Polynesian exhibits are vast and educational including the migrations of the Polynesians, comparing the different Pacific Island inhabitants, their languages, their weaving, their tools and much more.

So this is highly recommended for all tourists to get a taste of what New Zealand has to offer. Most other big cities have multiple museums, e.g. natural history, science, war museum, but Auckland has it all in one building and what a mish mash of stuff this is. There is everything in this museum, from Maori houses, dinosaurs, sharks,... More

Perfect to go with the family, you may plan for half day. They have a wonderful area about the NZ History and the Maori Culture that is fantastic. A good tip, they have 2 Maori Dance presentations one in the morning and one in the early afternoon, you may plan to be there at that time so you can enjoy... More
