Would recommend if you you have a couple of hours to spare. Lovely gallery with lots of diverse art. Not too big so you don't feel overwhelmed.

If you are ever in Auckland then a visit to the Art Gallery is a must. It doesn't take up a lot of time as you can go to the galleries that interest you to the most and skim the others. There were a couple of interesting exhibitions on whilst I was there plus some "Old Master" favourites. Even after... More

This is one of the most impressive gallery I've visited. I could have spent the whole day perusing the various exhibits and permanent fixtures. One of the best things about this place is that it is completely free (a rarity in Auckland). The location is perfect too, just outside Albert Park and overlooking the city. I definitely recommend this as... More

Am not really an art aficionado but a short detour one lazy morning fortunately brought me to the gallery. Perused the items in the shop at the foyer --- amused with some novelty items that were priced, hmmm, reasonably. Proceeded to the other parts of the building (paintings, portraits, interactive colour display) and before I knew it, twas time for... More

I was impressed to learn that the gallery first opened in 1888. The combination of national and international artwork is extremely fascinating. There are permanent and special exhibitions. Besides the various arts (paintings, drawings, sculptures, statues etc.) the building itself is a must-see. The heritage building dates back to 1887 and has been expanded with a modern part in 1995.... More

I'm not well-versed art person but this place really did catch my eye. My favourite would be anything related to the Maori! It's a good place to find out a little more about the Maori history. There is this section in the museum where they screen a REALLY long (in length) video depicting how life was for the Maori across... More

I enjoyed a few hours wandering about the Gallery which provided a great array of NZ art and artists. Easy to navigate with friendly staff, it is well worth a look. Whilst children might enjoy it, there is minimal interactive activities available.
