Must visit for art lovers. Got different levels of art with different approaches. Kids may not be much intrested in many exhibits where as they got plenty to do with lego in the lego area. Entry is free for new zealand residents where as a fee is charged for foreign visitors.

The rotating art on exhibit when I visited was a bit cliché. The chaotic presentation of macabre and disturbing imagery in dark and bold colors has been done to death. Although the photography of cemeteries and headstones was well done. The other, I assume, more permanent exhibits of portraits and Maori were interesting. But I found the architecture of the... Always a pleasure to view past and present art work, always changing and lots of variety. Great helpful staff and a beautiful place to spend 20 minutes of 2 hours. Excellent shop with a range of cheaper and more expensive items.

Different shows are always interesting. Lisa Reihana's huge video was a standout. Everyone interested in art should see this.

If you love art, spend some time or even an entire day here. Being in the presence of true art and the work of classical artists of the past is awe inspiring!

great place to look around the different exhibitions. There is always a variety of art that is constantly changing. I would recommend having a explore round the gallery as some of the exhibitions are slightly hidden.

Toi o Tamaki was undergoing a changeover while we were there so we didn't get to see all of it but what we did see was excellent. We took one of the guided tours which I would highly recommend as the enthusiastic tour guide was able to point out lots of things about the building and the collection that we... More

This was architecturally a lovely gallery with pretty outside views and interesting interior. We loved the exhibitions- especially the contemporary NZ art sections and the Lisa Reihana appropriation of "Les Sauvages de la mer Pacifique" and the quirky Billy Apple. An art gallery tells us a lot about the people of that country.

Worth spending 2 or 3 hours wandering the gallery, a number of very good cafe's in surrounding streets. We went early on a Saturday had breakfast then spent the time viewing the art.
