Skip all the islands and take the ferry to this peninsula. Rich history, beautiful shops, two volcano cones and tons of hiking and beautiful beaches. Go up to the volcano cone for best views of Auckland and fun left over military tunnels to explore.

We had taken the ferry to Devonport and found this place to be totally dead and actually there was nothing to do in this place. The place is quite boring and can definitely be skipped.

Take the ferry over for a lovely stroll around a charming part of the harbor. Walk among the shops and climb the fortress hill for some nice photos.

Good value on the ferry and visiting highlights on a bus tour around the area with wonderful commentary. Time to view the shops too.

Devonport is easily reached by ferry from the downtown Auckland City ferry terminal. It's a 15 minute journey. The town is built on the lower slopes of a small extinct volcano (Mt. Victoria) and once was a stand-alone township that was not connected to greater Auckland other than by a long land journey or a boat. The neighborhood retains it's... More

Our family loves to visit Devonport. We catch the ferry over, visit Devonport chocolates, walk to Mt Cictoria where the boys ride cardboard down the side of the hill, in Summer have a swim at Cheltenham beach, then wander back to Devonport village. There's a cafe in the Main Street called HoxtonDevonport that is great - fab coffee, awesome food.... More

Pleasant boat ride to a lovely quaint village with a nostalgic feel and a nice place to browse. Lots of eating places interesting walks. Sadly it rained on the day I went, so didn't do so much exploring as I would have liked.

Second time i've tried this cafe but its the second hit & miss. With 3 friends we ordered different meals and whilst the lasagne was really good the soup came out cold and had to be sent back ( it came back after we had all finished) the ugly bagel was just that! Frozen in the middle and just bland.... More

Devonport is a cool little town, just across the Harbour from the Auckland CBD. You can take the ferry across for about $5 each way. It's a nice way to escape from the busy CBD for a while. Lots of little restaurants, boutiques, etc to keep anyone entertained for at least a few hours.
