This was a real gem. It's across the harbour from Auckland ( 12 minute ferry ride). It was like stepping back in time with beautiful quaint houses and restaurants and bars. It was really relaxing and laid back which was a total contrast to Auckland. This is a must visit and the views across the bay are spectacular.

A slow paced town with a terrific main street. Great for walking and having a nice lunch. You can't be in a rush in this town. Great views of the city if you go to the top of the mountain where the old gun emplacement was.

We were given return ferry tickets to Devonport as part of our Harbour Cruise and were glad we made the effort to visit. The Main Street was full of fascinating shops selling vintage goods, books and fabrics, and we enjoyed coffee and cake in one of the many cafes. We also enjoyed the short walk to the viewpoint overlooking the... More

Visited via ferry. Went to see both former volcanoes, the beach and had late lunch. Most shops were closed. As well as quite a few restaurants. Nothing to write home about I would say. Nice people.

Accessible ferry trip to a different world - almost village set in time. Great views and walks amongst a thriving community

Starting out from the ferry terminal you walk up the hill passing a myriad of places to eat. Plenty of views of the harbor.

The ferry from Auckland harbour is reasonably cheap ($11.50pp return), and quite short. However, the views of Auckland are wonderful. Devonport's shopping and restaurant area is about 2 blocks long and well worth a visit, especially if travelling with women - lots of women's clothing and bookstores.

With all the shops, restaurants, waterfront park, and the ferry port at its doorstep, I'm trying to think of a downside to this charming town, but I'll have to work on that a bit longer. We spent a week here, and returned a month later to see it one more time, because we couldn't leave New Zealand without seeing it... More

Great Location on the other side of the Bridge looking back at the stunning Skyline of Auckland. Real village atmosphere and a great place to stay. Some lovely guest-houses.
