A well run, delightfully restored, friendly heritage railway, operating steam locos on an old branch line near Pukekohe. There are volunteers here of all ages, and some very competent engineers doing amazing work at the depot half way down the line. It runs from "the middle of nowhere" to the small town of Waiuku about 7km away. We drove from... More

I boarded the train at Waiuku, and did the return trip. Very impressed by everything - authentic and clean carriages, shiny engine, helpful volunteers in period costume, excellent modern and clean toilets at Glenbrook plus a well-stocked shop. Best of all was the ride on the hand jigger! This was such fun, and such a bargain at only $1 per... More

We visited the railway last weekend after reading about it in a google search. If I hadn't specifically looked for 'things to do in Pukekohe' I don't think we would have known it was close by. That leads me to thinking that this is a gem that needs to be discovered! We really enjoyed looking around the station, seeing the... More

Took a ride with the family including elderly parents. Everybody absolutely loved it. On the way back you do a little stopover at the railway yard where you can take pics with Thomas the Tank Engine.

We've been visiting GVR pretty much annually for close to 30 years and have always enjoyed it. The volunteers do a great job of creating an authentic vintage experience; dressing appropriately, despite the heat and maintaining the steam engines and vintage carriages. Take a picnic and enjoy a wonderful family day out. Children will love the playground and adults will... More

This railway experience offers fun and excitement for a whole range of people and for different reasons! We recently made the round trip from Glenbrook to Waiuku and back. The older members of the family could reminisce about their memories of old steam trains and the younger ones learnt about how railways work as they talked to their family and... More

Took my ASD train-obsessed nephew and my 3 year old train-mad son and had a great day. Have been a few times and it's always good. $NZ30 for a day pass is good value. We did the 11am return trip and then on the 1230 got off at Waiuku and went to the playground and for a walk and had... More

We boarded the steam train in Glenbrook at the restored station. All the staff were dressed in period costume which made you feel that you had really travelled back in time. The weather was beautiful so we opted to travel in an open air carriage for the half hour journey to Waiuku. The station masters whistle then the toot of... More

We were taken by our daughter and son-in-law for a day trip to Waiuku from Glenbrook. It was a lovely day out as part of our granddaughter's Christmas. The train brought back memories of "riding the rails" as a child in the UK. The bonus was the Christmas Display in Waiuku, what a range of Christmas decoration; the granddaughter was... More
