We stopped off at Matahoke especially to go to the Kauri Museum. It was awesome. We had two kids with us who also really enjoyed the wonderful displays and information. don't miss this. more

We were recommended to stop here by one of motel stays on our North Island tour, and were not disappointed. What a fabulous museum full to the brim with stunning recreated sets of kauri history. The Gum room (amber) at the end of your tour is stunning with lots of exquisite carvings of the gum (amber) . Not to be... more

As others said -- this has an amazing amount and variety of history and exhibits -- which was all put together by volunteers. If you came to see the forest, then don't miss the museum to provide the context. more

The name sounds like some roadside attraction along Route 66, but it is certainly not that. The Kauri Museum is a first rate place to see. The Kauri Museum is a wonderful museum; particularly if you are interested in how life in New Zealand was in the late 1800s through the mid-1900s, or if you are interested in trees or the logging industry.
