No one should leave the North Island without doing this excellent one-day hike. It is not that difficult as it may seem (if you are lucky with the weather as we were) and you will see beautiful sceneries on the way - volcanoes, colourful lakes etc., even though the last third of the trek was a bit monotonous. I definitely... More

The landscapes are quite different from most of the green landscapes that you would normally associate with New Zealand. We did the hike in the beginning of April with a group of friends before any snow or ice were in the mountains and so it was not as difficult as it would have been with snow and ice. I am... More

We had a lot of fun hiking the Tongariro Traverse - we did it guided with Tongariro Apline Guides. The guides worked hard to make a path through deep snow and safer routes over slippery stairs and elevated boardwalks. We were super grateful to have the company's hiking boots and gators as we walked through the varying depths of snow.... More

Let me start by saying that my husband and I are both moderately fit people in our late 20s/early thirties, and we completed the crossing on a day with supposedly good weather. The first part of the crossing was very manageable, which gave us a false impression of how difficult the rest of the ascent would be. We noticed many... More

In actual fact we went a year or two earlier than Nov 2014. A stunning walk enhanced by a volcanic eruption of ash and steam right in front of us. Worrying at the time but unmissable.

This walk is justifiable one of great walks in NZ. My only disappointment was that there were too many people on the track. I like the solitude of the mountains when I walk. Not having the strongest legs I made it to the top and it was worth it. Having lunch sheltered by a giant rock was fun as we... More

What an amazing experience! I did this with a group of friends and I would do it over and over again. I would recommend going in the warmer months though as we went in March and it was very cold even then. Make sure you take plenty to eat and drink as it is a long walk. The views were... More

For sure in the top 5 things I ve ever done. We walked for 8 hours (including stops at toilets, lunch, break for pics...) and it was simply amazing. A good thing is to check always the weather conditions before you go to make sure you will be able to see perfectly the view from the top.we were extremely lucky... More

I say this was average because the weather really obstructed the views. Lots of walking involved, expect 5 hours of walking minimum. Wear good foot wear, dress for quickly changing weather conditions, stay safe. This is an alpine walk at high altitudes, but not so high you need good experience and equipment, just physical fitness and stamina.

We had all the best bits. A super cold day with ice and snow on the track but blue sky and not a hint of cloud the whole day. We did the crossing with guides - picked up early from Tui Lodge B & B in Turangi and geared up with super comfortable boots + ice picks, helmets and crampons.... More
