Beautiful scenery over the lake. We got a motel looking over the lake with the mountains as a backdrop. Stunning

The Great Lake is just stunning. It's beautiful on every angle and there are a few stops on the way, do take a break from your driving and enjoy the refreshing breeze from the lake. Great place to chill and relax.

Just loved this lake. We stayed in a freedon site right on the lake edges. Quite crowded with other campervans but very friendly. Our trip around the lake with our onward journey was beautiful. A must see in NZ

A beautiful lake with the snow capped mountain in the background! We spent the night at the Millennium Hotel with a lake front room, it was breathtakingly beautiful at dawn and at sunset! A walk around the lake after breakfast is super nice, and you can watch people doing all kinds of water sports on the lake. you will never... More

We had this spot chosen for us by our holiday club and we were so glad to have such a relaxing place to spend a weeks holiday in North Island, New Zealand. This place is also popular with the locals who also choose this place for their vacations. There is lots of activities for all ages such as visiting the... More

We were headed to the Tongariro National Park but stopped here for lunch and so glad we did. It was one of the nicest little towns we visited in all of New Zealand. The lake is beautiful and I could easily see spending time here in the summer months. We traveled around the lake on the left hand side and... More

Beautiful sprawling lake, best observed by driving left from Taupo in my opinion. Plenty of places to stop for a nice picnic and a swim. Makes for great driving scenery too but don't get distracted! Just note that there are very few public toilets around and there's no point in stopping at camping grounds as they lock theirs. Enjoy!

Beautiful blue lake with great views across to the volcanic mountains. Tons of tranquil bays & streams to stop and contemplate the world go by! Easy access for a swim and the ability to undertake any water activity your heart desires! Natural attractions are a must see - Huca Falls & Craters of the Moon to name just a few... More

This is one of the most beautiful lakes in the area. It's dimensions,186m deep are quite mind boggling but the beauty of the area and the lake is really something you could spend half a day on. Walk around, visit one of the many cafes around and generally do nothing. Loved it!
