Lake Taupo is such a beautiful spot. It seems to go on and on and its intense blue is really mesmerising. Stroll along the beach and gaze out over the waters while the cormorants are sunbathing on the heated rocks at the shore line. A highlight for kids is the eastern part of the beach that still lies in the... More

The lake is nice on the eyes whether driving around the edge or stopping at one of the beaches or overlooks. Gorgeous New Zealand views with the high mountains in the background.

From my Yank perspective, this natural wonder combines the best of Oregon's Crater Lake National Park and Lake Tahoe, on the California-Nevada border, but without the frenetic resort development of the latter. Like those two, Taupo is a water-filled caldera, or huge volcano crater, surrounded by steep slopes that add drama to the landscape -- and to the road around... More

Taupo is a beautiful town to spend some time in. Nice lake with plenty of beach around the eastern side. Good camping sites. Great motels and hotels. Heaps of restaurants. Lots of fishing. Sight seeing. Hot pools. River activities. Trip advisor has nearly 300 things to do but I'm sure there are more. Ever tried prawn fishing with a rod?... More

What a beautiful part of the world Lake Taupo is - I wasn't for some reason expecting much but was completely blown away at how beautiful and serene the area is. Do not miss this when you visit the North Island of NZ.

Went here for a camping weekend and it did not let us down. Great buzz around and loads of designated camper van parking spots. If its sunny its even better.

What an amazing place the Lake Taupo area is! We stayed in Taupo at a great house through Bachcare. The area is simply stunning with the snow capped mountains across the lake. Make sure you take on of the sails on the lake to see the Maori rock carvings. We went on the old steamer Ernest Kemp, great fun.

Lake Taupo remains one of our favourite freshwater lakes in the world. We love spending time at Taupo (town), driving around the lake, taking boat rides and and looking at the this beautiful body of water with the lovely Mount Tongariro in the backdrop. In addition to this being a world-class trout fishery, there are other ways to enjoy time... More
