The setting of the town of Taupo by it's lake surrounded by volcanoes, capped with snow even in January, is enchanting. The town itself, obviously built without reference to town planning, is dire. You get fast food outlet after fast food outlets, noisy bars and very average restaurants next to each other in prime locations. Activities in the area are... More

I took the family to have a few days there at Lake Taupo. Middle part of North Island of New Zealand. The lake is so calm and beautiful. Very much enjoyed the swimming. Good water front restaurants available, recommend to shop around before settle in the dining. As the price could be quite different. Loved the place. Highly recommended.

We visit Taupo usually twice a year and this time took our road bikes to try the bike paths. The one from the city to 4 mile bay was wonderful, sealed all the way and largely flat, it was an easy and pleasant ride with lots of scenery and great homes to look at - as well as good picnic... More

We were planning on staying over at Taupo but got waylaid in Rotorua, however this place looked amazing and there was so much to choose from to do. We ended up doing the jet boat (separate review) and loved it to bits. Was very impressed with how clean it was although there was hundreds of people around ! McDonalds Plane... More

My husband, son and I just returned from 8 days in Lake Taupo and we certainly didn't want to leave. Firstly, I just want to say that it doesn't have to be a huge expense. We found our lovely timeshare week on Trade Me- 7 nights for $650!! Unheard of at peak summer/school holidays. It was right on the lake front... More

Taupo was lovely. Good eateries good shops quiet. Few beaches. We done a scenic cruise to the carvings which was cool $35 each about 1 1/2 hours on the cruise. Good views of the volcanos etc you don't get up mega close but enough for a good photo. We ate at cobb & co pub was very nice. Parking was... More

Loved the views of this lake! Big, pretty nice drive, the town nearby we found the food to be overpriced along the waterside

This was my second visit to Lake Taupo... it's the largest lake in New Zealand (by size). At some of Lake Taupo's beaches, swimmers and paddlers can enjoy warm, geothermal water currents. It's a lovely place to go and see.

Lake Taupo is such a beautiful spot. It seems to go on and on and its intense blue is really mesmerising. Stroll along the beach and gaze out over the waters while the cormorants are sunbathing on the heated rocks at the shore line. A highlight for kids is the eastern part of the beach that still lies in the... More

The lake is nice on the eyes whether driving around the edge or stopping at one of the beaches or overlooks. Gorgeous New Zealand views with the high mountains in the background.
