The beach is only a 20minute tram ride from the CBD, but there are definitely prettier beaches to explore if you have your own transportation.

The day we visited it was cold and wet. We had been up Acland Street and walked down to the beach, it was so clean. The rain put us off walking along the beach path to the pier so will have to do next time.

It's easy & inexpensive to get a tram from Melbourne to St Kildas. Just before sunset make your way down the pier to the breakwater. Stand on the wooden walkway by the little beach & wait quietly for the Penguins to come in. Bring some red cellophane to put over your torch/flash (normal torch/flashlights harms the Penguins). Bring a warm... More

It's an awesome beach with a very pleasant breeze blowing all the time. You can find lots of entertainment all around. Lots of food places and good enough space to have beach football / volleyball if you're visiting with friends or family. Apart from that, one can also enjoy the serenity and quietness of the beach in a far off... More

While the night scene in St Kilda is largely flash and trash, during the day it’s a vibrant, beachside suburb, with lots to do, even if it’s just people watching. Recently I had a great day exploring St Kilda: having brunch at Fitzrovia, strolling through the St Kilda Botanical Gardens, visiting Luna Park, having afternoon tea at the kiosk on... More

Beach and pier scenic - strolled about for quite sometime enjoying the ambiance of the front. Spoiled by the public toilets - filthy and completely neglected - the second worst we saw in Australia - disgusting. Penguins were sweet! Lots of bars and restaurants in main street and surrounds but also some rude servers which I was rather taken aback... More

St kilda beach is good for a walk before lunch during our stay about 10mins away from our place...enjoy the walk to the pier and we managed to see little penguins in between rocks near the beach and the pier...apparently the were hiding between rocks and bushes with their young...a mini philip island without paying for a tour tour see... I love St Kilda beach! There are many restaurants and bars along the boardwalk and many things to do. If you're still around at sunset, walk down to the VERY back of the pier behind the shelter on the pier and you can see all of the little penguins coming in. It's very exciting!

Well worth a visit. An Australian twist on a British seaside resort, including a pier and fairground. Not as well appointed along the front as might be expected. Many of the coffee shops are back from the sea front on the main street, Excellent beach within easy reach of the City.
