Dating back as far as 1854, the theatre was purchased by Marriner Theatres in 1986 and plans were immediately put in place for its total refurbishment to ensure its future viability as a live theatre venue. The Princess Theatre reopened in 1989 with the musical ‘Les Miserables’ followed by ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ which established a new record for the longest-running show ever staged in Victoria. Today, it continues to host some of the world’s most renowned theatre productions. « less

We went to see The King and I, which was a spectacular production, the set, costumes and overall quality of the show was top notch. Tickets were easy to purchase and venue is well located. If I had any criticisms it would be the following (though don't give a lot of weight to these) the toilet facilities are inadequate for... More

I have seen a couple shows at this theatre, including Jersey Boys and The King And I, and this theatre is just beautiful. The ceilings of this building are so intricately designed with such beautiful colours. The seats are comfortable, and you get a great view of the stage from the front row of the dress circle. The incline of... More

Ushers were very professional, the architecture is extravagant. I came with two others to see the King and I, and was not disappointed. Because the theatre is quite petite in size, even in the third balcony we were able to see facial expressions and get a good view of all that was happening. Great sound quality as well. Some tips:... Went to The King and I during a recent trip to Melbourne, the show was fantastic with lots of colour and music. The children were really great in the show. The theatre is comfortable but the seats were uncomfortable, they need either a really good 'facelift' or to be replaced.

Loved the show Lisa McCune was great as was the understudy Chris? who played the King. My main comment would be about the safety for people in the last couple of rows. The seats don't have a lot of room between them & there were quite a few elderly or disabled people that had been seated at the end of... More

Sat in Grand Circle first row seats 17 and 18. Wow what a view. We could see the orchestra and the whole stage. There is around 90 stairs to climb to this spot so keep this in mind! The costumes were fantastic. Lisa McCune is brilliant and even though the understudy played the King on the night he was awesome.... More

Great show, awesome costumes, singing was inconsistent - some incredible (the kings #1 wife was fantastic) and some ordinary ( the boyfriends) but a really enjoyable show. Theatre has LOTS of steps and was awkward for less able folk. Seats were very cramped.... Not so much width as the knee/ leg room. Would be uncomfortable unless an aisle or spare... More

Beautiful outside actual theatre, however the view from the seats in the stalls very average despite having A reserve tickets. Not enough grade to the floor. Packed in like sardines and looked into the back of people's head for most of the show. Others commented too on the need for a renovation. Very disappointing as I expected more for my... More

If you are a lover of the arts... You would enjoy this place. Every seat has a good view. This is a must try in Melbourne. C'mon! I am only here for 48hrs and I found time to watch a show!
