Formerly the State Theatre, the Forum Melbourne first opened in 1929 with the largest seating capacity of any theatre in Australia. Since then the venue has been divided into two separate venues. Downstairs, Forum I is famous for its unique architecture, large stage, mesmerising proscenium and signature cabaret style booths. Upstairs, Forum II is a smaller venue with tiered seating, small stage, surround sound and cinema size screen. Renowned as one of Melbourne’s most unique and best live music venues, the Forum plays host to many bands, singers, comedians and popular festivals every year. When not being used for live music, the venue comes alive as an amazing function space for events such as cocktail parties, launches and fashion events.

We love the history and the beautiful interior of the Forum Theatre. We saw La Soiree on Saturday night and it was just sensational! Great theatre. Very funny. We love the Forum as a venue for music and theatrical performances.

I saw a movie at the Forum during the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF). This is definitely not your normal movie theatre. Be prepared, it doesn't have cup holders or reclining chairs but has an old fashion charm, which is missing from the modern theatres.

Whenever I hear that a good band is playing the Forum I cheer because this historic (and very quirky) venue gives you the chance to get up close or sit back with a drink and watch the others. It's good value if you love your music. I remember going here for movies when I was a kid and the bizarre... More

The Forum is part of my youth and my present too as it hosts the Film festival each year. It is a great place - baroque, atmospheric, startling and with that seedy sort of charm some old places have. Vertiginous steps, old toilet blocks, dark corners all add to the harm - don't be put off.

Nice to explore one's own city when one stumbles across - with Tripadvisors help - a charming curio of a theatre, next to two top eateries, with an interesting graffiti-ed lane in-between - and gets to watch a top show to boot! What a lovely night, two "half-tix" for me and my 12 year old, to a top comedy show... More

This theatre is on Flinders Street - almost like being in Russia (with its dome twirls). Fascinating architecture. Photographer's dream as well as tourists' must see and capture for the memories. Catch a play/show here if you can

This is my favourite theatre in Melbourne. Understated and overlooked, it's a lovely place to be. Great for music concerts and theatre alike. Go next door to Movida while you're there and make a night of it!
