Description: Melbourne Recital Centre comprises two of the finest acoustic spaces in...
Melbourne Recital Centre comprises two of the finest acoustic spaces in the southern hemisphere, carefully crafted to present the best music the world has to offer.

Drawing fundamental influence from the traditional box shape of European concert halls, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall is lined with striking plywood panels of Australian plantation Hoop Pine timber, designed to resemble the back of a beautiful instrument and provide greater acoustic intimacy across the 1000-seat auditorium. The superbly organic acoustics of the hall extend to the Salon, a uniquely intimate 150-seat space that can also act as a companion room to the hall. Comprising a series of diffusing timber panels with tessellated plywood faces tipped in and out to form a modulated wall and ceiling, Percy Grainger’s 1937 graphic score, Free Music No. 2 is inscribed across the surface to inspire players and audiences alike. Swing by, say hello and book tickets to a show. Discover why Melbourne Recital Centre is the Best Place to Hear beautiful music.

Acoustics are brilliant. Front of house most polite and helpful. A good view of the performance from all the seats. Well worth a visit.

The Melbourne recital centre is a great place to listen to music, especially if it is acoustic or "lightly amplified". We have listened to all sorts of music, from the Punch Brothers, string quartets, coral ensembles, etc. The best places to listen are always central, unless you get too far back- under the upstairs eaves gives a thinner sound. Loud... More

I'm a local and a repeat visitor to this wonderful venue. It's promotional line is that it's "The best place to hear ..." and it is. This world-beating (think Wigmore, Musikverein) auditorium, shoe-box in shape and coated in indigenous timber panelling wending their way around the walls and ceiling in wave-like patterns, has the most perfect acoustic. Its walls transmit... More

I'm a classical music lover and regular concert goer in cities all around the world. I've heard performances at the Melbourne Recital Centre at least 100 times since the venue opened in 2009. It is not only my favourite venue in Melbourne, but one of my favourite venues anywhere in the world. The acoustic is fantastic and the predominately wood... More

We have been in Concert Halls around the world, but this was our first visit to this gem, which is here in our own backyard. We attended the Melbourne Girls' Grammar School's music concert and were thrilled and amazed by the incredibly high standard of talent, often genius, shown by these young ladies. The acoustics are just great with the... More

This incredible building is tucked away behind the more well-known Arts Centre. It was the perfect venue to listen and appreciate the wonderful genius of the Australian Brandenberg Orchestra last weekend. Superb venue, amazing acoustics, quite audience and a sensation event in all aspects. This is a must-visit attraction to see a performance, any performance, when in Melbourne.

I attended the concerts of both Beth Hart, and John Mayall, in the past week, sitting in row B (to side and near centre), on both occasions, and was so disappointed with the acoustics and/or the sound mixing. The listening experience was the worst I have had for some time. For example, in the later half of Beth Hart's performance,... More

Wow! What an incredible venue. We went to see Sarah McLachlan, and despite our best efforts ended up with seats up in the nosebleeds... apart from the climbing of the stairs (not sure if there was an elevator, but at least the escalator up the first flight helped. The seats were wide enough to be comfortable, but too close to... More

Spent a lovely evening listening to Tchaicovsky et al in the gloriously decorated Recital Hall. Incredibly classy Australian wooden paneling on the walls and ceiling, great acoustics, just lovely. Not enough staff working on the bar at interval to grab a drink in the 20 minutes given though.

This is a valuable venue for music lovers. The acoustics have been designed for the discerning, and though I don't know much about this I do know that I've heard excellent work (opera, baroque, etc). Seats are comfortable. As other reviewers note, the lack of a centre aisle means it is almost inevitable that you'll have people squeezing past you.... More
