The Theatre Royal opened in 1837, with major additions in 1850 and 1890, and remains a living centre for the performing arts. It presents live theatre, contemporary music, dance and entertainment. Dubbed by Noel Coward "a dream of a theatre", the Theatre Royal is Australia's oldest working theatre and one of its most beautiful treasures.

This was our second visit to this venue so the first visit wasn't just "good luck" it really is a nice place to see and hear a live show. At intermission we were able to buy refreshments (an acceptable Tasmanian whie wine in our case). Car parking was easy at a nearby car park in Market Street though there is... More

A fascinating theatre with a very interesting and colourful history. Built in the undesirable part of town, amongst the brothels, factories and public housing, there is still evidence of a seedier time, including the bar located below the ground floor seating. The theatre has undergone many changes over the past 150 years, including additional stage room and dressing rooms, and... More

A beautiful building, with an outstanding interior. Small and compact, but comfortable seats, and very helpful staff.

This is a magnificent Theatre , one of the nicest ones I have ever been to. The acoustics are amazing and chairs comfortable. Catch a show here, you will love it.

A great experience in a very lovely theatre. The venue is well presented and the staff are good at customer service. The theatre is small and some seats have thin supporting pillars in the way. Best to do some research when booking. Very personal theatre experience and if there is time a tour is recommended.

This theatre is simply delightful with its intricate and ornate ceiling. It is a small intimate theatre with good acoustics and comfortable seats. The foyer is quite small which can make waiting for the doors to open a little crowded. There are some narrow poles that give some obstruction to the stage, however, seats can be booked that have a... More

Hubby and I saw the 2015 Uni Revue on May 12. The show was as expected and full of the usual excellent comedy and clothing. We just loved it. The only downfall is how close you sit to others. I felt really squashed in. I couldn't move my arms without hitting the person next to me. We sat on the... More

Surviving a fire that might have been disastrous in the 1980s and perennial funding problems, the Hobart Theatre Royal is the oldest and most beautiful surviving theatre in Australia. Excellently-led guided tours are available regularly at a small cost. Participants are taken front and back stage and into the dressing room used by Laurence Olivier in 1948.

The theatre Royal is an amazing building, built in 1834-36 by the family of Hugh Macintosh and Peter Degraves. Interesting that the founders of Cascade Brewery, Australia's oldest brewery, should also be responsible for the oldest operating theatre in Australia it is incredible to sit in and the atmosphere is amazing and intimate. I wish that they would put some... More

The guided tour allows visitors to go on stage and view Australia's oldest working theatre from a performer’s perspective, as well as entry to the backstage areas, including the green room and dressing rooms. Our guide was engaging and informative, and connected the story of the site to the many characters that have been central throughout its history. The tour... More
