The Theatre Royal opened in 1837, with major additions in 1850 and 1890, and remains a living centre for the performing arts. It presents live theatre, contemporary music, dance and entertainment. Dubbed by Noel Coward "a dream of a theatre", the Theatre Royal is Australia's oldest working theatre and one of its most beautiful treasures.

Famously rescued in the 1940s by Sir Laurence Olivier's call for help, this gorgeous little theatre has been totally restored to Victorian red and gold splendour. Call in and ask to have a peek or buy a ticket to a show. Also hosts music events. It's about a 10 minute walk from City Centre.

No matter what performance is on and how good it actually turns out to be, I always enjoying visiting the Theatre Royal. As well as being architecturally astounding, the staff members are always polite, friendly and helpful. Keep up the good work!

An evening at the theatre, seeing local performers or Bell Shakespeare, is a great way to spend an evening in Hobart at this wonderful old building. There is a full programme of events available from the Box Office or their website. When you arrive, it's another world with the packed foyer, a drink at the bar, the audience settling down,... Walking up Campbell street we saw the sign offering a tour of the theater that started in a few minutes so hopped in and bought tickets. They split those attending two into two smaller groups of 7 and 8 people which made the tour far more intimate. Our guide, Robyn, first took us outside where it was pointed out how... More

This was a great show made even better by the fantastic theatre. It is superbly maintained, comfortable and has great sound. Visit if you're in Hobart even if it's just to see the venue.

The Theatre Royal is a great place to watch a show. We saw "Croon" which was a big band and singers doing 40's and 50's numbers. Awesome!

A quaint, but fully functioning theatre that rates as one of the oldest in Australia. Theatre Royal is a joy to explore. If you get a chance to take a tour, do it. So many things one never sees when you attend a play or event. And, if you are in town when one of the many events are staged... More

We were alerted to this Theatre when we passed on the red double decker bus and so we booked a swing concert in the afternoon and were very pleased to find ourselves in a good ol fashion theatre with excellent acoustic properties. our seats were perfect and the performance was great. it is so nice that the city has kept... A beautiful, elegant and intimate theatre. The theatre Royal has old world charm great acoustic. The red velvet seats are very comfy to sit in to watch a show. The amazing stair case is breath taking. If you are going to watch a show I recommend sitting in the premium seats it costs a little more but well worth the... More
