The Theatre Royal opened in 1837, with major additions in 1850 and 1890, and remains a living centre for the performing arts. It presents live theatre, contemporary music, dance and entertainment. Dubbed by Noel Coward "a dream of a theatre", the Theatre Royal is Australia's oldest working theatre and one of its most beautiful treasures.

This is a gracious old dame of a building with its rococo details and quirky sight lines. Be prepared to crane around a post if you book a seat with a 'compromised view' of the stage. The seats in the dress circle are comfy but the space can get hot and stuffy in Summer. It's a relief when they throw... More

We were up in the gods. Wooden bench seats that weren't super comfortable but they were cheaper. It was also a bit too warm and muggy up there. Beautiful stage and theatre.

We have been here many times over the years to a variety of shows and performances. The theatre is only small but very ornate with good seating and views of the stage.

I went and joint the tour when my friend and I visited Hobart. I was doubt when my friend showed me the place. I stood in front of the door, and thought it was just a small unattractive theater. But I was wrong. The theater is huge. I'm amazed with how pretty the place is. The tour took about an... More

The Theatre Royal in Hobart is famous and many famous actors have performed here over its lifetime. It is a small intimate theatre with a magnificent chandelier. When visiting Hobart attending a performance here should be one of your must dos.

It is without doubt the most intimate, charming and well preserved theatre anywhere in Australia. A "must see" when you are in Hobart. It's exciting to realise that this lovely old theatre has been kept in such a beautiful state. Even if you are not a regular theatre patron you will be surprised and thankful that this wonderful gem has reinstated to... More

The Theatre Royal is a stunning, tiny theatre where the audience feels connected to the stage and performers. An amazing place with a great range of performances. Be aware though, that the seats in the gods are bench seats - bring a cushion!

Famously rescued in the 1940s by Sir Laurence Olivier's call for help, this gorgeous little theatre has been totally restored to Victorian red and gold splendour. Call in and ask to have a peek or buy a ticket to a show. Also hosts music events. It's about a 10 minute walk from City Centre.

No matter what performance is on and how good it actually turns out to be, I always enjoying visiting the Theatre Royal. As well as being architecturally astounding, the staff members are always polite, friendly and helpful. Keep up the good work!
