Located in North Hobart, the State is a local independent cinema that has entertained generations of Tasmanians for over 100 years. In addition to eight cinema screens, we also have a boutique bookstore, cafe bar and rooftop cinema. Our cinema is licensed, so you can enjoy a glass of wine while enjoying a movie!

Comfortable seats, small and intimate theatres. Great films. Take in a glass of wine and relax. Fifteen people in the first film and seven in the second (and that was Testament of Youth on ANZAC night). Wake up Hobart and discover what you are missing!

The State Cinema is over 100 years old and yet is the contemporary heart of the city for all those interested in film as a medium. As well as showing the most diverse collection of contemporary international and local films, it regularly hosts film festivals and special events. It has a very good bookshop and represents a real place of... More

Just had lunch at the State Theatre. Not the first time of course, as we live nearby. The food was really tasy, I had fish paced in coconut milk with coriander. Just delicious. Certainly not a huge serve, but really good for a light lunch. ($16.50). The frittata is really good value ($12), the various cakes are pretty to look... More

A trip to the cinema with a difference. Excellent choice of films (many not shown in 'popular' cinemas), comfortable theatres and a three story cafe / restaurant worth visiting in its' own right.

The State is a great Hobart asset, it has a great range of films on and even though some of the cinemas are small I like the intimate setup which allows a wide range of films to get a run. I admit I go their pretty regularly, sometimes I don't even know what to see until I get there and... More

The State cinema has done wonderful things for movies in Hobart. It shows many movies that do not come to the chains, and it is wonderful to be able to see these movies. The cafe and bar are good places to meet friends even if not attending a movie. My only gripe is that maybe too many cinemas have been... More

I love seeing a movie at the State Theatre every time I am in Hobart visiting family. The theatres are small and intimate, comfortable and a bit quirky in this beautiful old building. You can have a lovely inexpensive lunch in the restaurant there in modern, light surroundings before or after the movie. Its well worth it.

This historic cinema (1913!) is beautiful. It also has a tremendous range of films, friendly staff and a fantastic cafe. Check out the rooftop cinema in summer. I try and make a film every Hobart visit.

Cool place to have a drink and watch a flick. Roof top sessions add to the uniqueness. Great bookstore for some hard-to-get issues.
