The State Cinema in North Hobart is a Tasmanian institution, being more than 100 years old. In recent years extensions have included a great little bookshop and a much larger cafe with seating spread over two floors. There's a blackboard menu with a range of savoury dishes including toasted sandwiches, Thai curries, cheese platters, soup of the day, etc. The... More

This is my favourite cinema in Hobart, very comfortable seating and very good acoustics. With new releases its wise to make a booking first. I really like the fact that you can have a drink or meal before or after the movies as the State Theatre has a café.

What a gem! If you are a cinema goer, this gem is a must, and if you're not, then this is the place to start. Lovely comfortable cute cinemas, take your glass of wine and nibblies from the bar in with you, find a little corner in a cosey chair to sit and relax while you wait for your movie,... More

What better way to spend a few hours on a cold winter's day. With a birthday to celebrate - lovely lunch in the café, then a great movie to watch. A very pleasant time.

Visited to watch a movie with family. Great experience and could take wine into the theatre. The cinema experience was like Village Gold Club with good seats, wine and access to quality food. Recommended if you are visiting Hobart for a few days and the weather is not perfect. North Hobart also has good eating venues for an after cinema... More

I have enjoyed attending this theatre for over 40 years and have recently been disappointed by the more "big business" practice of selling gift voucher tickets that expire. I had been unwell for a couple of months when I was hoping to use the tickets I received for Christmas. I looked at them today, hoping I am physically improving enough... More

Comfortable seats, small and intimate theatres. Great films. Take in a glass of wine and relax. Fifteen people in the first film and seven in the second (and that was Testament of Youth on ANZAC night). Wake up Hobart and discover what you are missing!

The State Cinema is over 100 years old and yet is the contemporary heart of the city for all those interested in film as a medium. As well as showing the most diverse collection of contemporary international and local films, it regularly hosts film festivals and special events. It has a very good bookshop and represents a real place of... More

Just had lunch at the State Theatre. Not the first time of course, as we live nearby. The food was really tasy, I had fish paced in coconut milk with coriander. Just delicious. Certainly not a huge serve, but really good for a light lunch. ($16.50). The frittata is really good value ($12), the various cakes are pretty to look... More
