A relaxed atmosphere for a nice meal before attending the theatre. A good choice on the menu and if you choose you can just have coffee.

The State Cinema has it all. Great alternative cinema for lovers of arthouse, foreign and non Hollywood films. Licensed, so take your wine/drinks in with you. Nine cinemas including a roof top one for summer nights, small cinemas with lounges, all cosy and intimate. The cafe is a popular meeting place for us locals, even without attending a film. Beautiful... More

Love, love the State cinema and all that it offers - food, wine, bookstore, film selection etc. However my biggest gripe is with some of the patrons who seem to think this is their personal theatre and can talk through films, eat/drink noisily and arrive late to a screening. I am a regular at this venue and have witnessed this... More

You can make a real afternoon of going to the State Cinema in North Hobart. It is situated amongst the strip of lovely restaurants, you could choose to meet there prior to going to the Cinema or eat there. There is a beautiful Cafe at the back with old black and white movies running in the background. The food is... More

Old school cinema with a wine bar. Mainstream and arty films in a lovely cinema. If you go to the cinema go here.

Intimate theatres, great selection of popular, foreign and arthouse movies, and excellent restaurant and bookshop. You could easily while away a good proportion of a day here.....

We have just returned home without seeing the film we went to see having had our gift vouchers dishonoured. We will never visit this theatre again, and would recommend that others avoid it. We are contacting consumer protection to ascertain whether we can recover the price of the tickets effectively stolen by this organisation.

As with all gift voucher sales, they do have expiry dates (printed on the voucher) and unfortunately we cannot accept expired vouchers. More

When we're home in Hobart we visit "The State" regularly. This week it was "Charlie's Country", featuring the iconic David Gulpilil; next up "The Keeper of Lose Causes" and then maybe "The Selfish Giant". From mainstream crime to art house to film noir this cinema has got plenty to keep you entertained. There are 7 cinemas in the building: small,... More

I have been going to the State for years and have watched it grow, mature and develop as a total entertainment concept. For me it has all the elements I want - the opportunity to eat before or after the film with a reasonable range of food, great adult nibbles to accompany the movie, the civilised decision to allow you... I thoroughly enjoyed my night out at the State Cinema with my partner recently. We went to an evening session and found the cinema staff very welcoming. One thing that i loved the most was that you were free to grab a glass of wine or beer and take it around with you into the cinema or even around the... More
