Since John Kelly took this over some years ago it has just grown and improved as an experience. He has added extra theatres, a cafe, a roof top cinema, good coffee and always an excellent range of quality movies. Always a lovely experience spending time there. And even a very interesting book shop to browse.

The state gives a bit of cache to a night at the films in Hobart. Great coffee that you can take into the cinema (or a glass of Tassie wine) and intimate seating in large comfortable chairs. The food in the attached restaurant is also very good. Not often we go to any other theaters. We are regulars.

The State has good movies and has several small theatres. It's great to go out and enjoy a glass of wine and watch a movie and maybe have coffee and cake after. Very popular so best to arrive early or book. This works well as the last time I booked online there were no problems.

Arthouse films as well as features. Up to date technology with a variety of smaller cinemas. Great cafe on site and very close to the well known North Hobart restaurant district. Day and night sessions to cater for all.

An amazing collection of eclectic movies in wonderful cinema spaces. Close to the restaurant strip but you can get small meals on site. There is a outdoor roof top cinema as well but movie screenings are dependent on the weather.

There are many small cinemas in the complex to allow for small groups of viewers. Around these are comfortable seated areas where you can eat great food and wine purchased on the premises. Adjacent to these is a bookshop through which you can browse. I visit there sometimes to see a movie and sometimes to meet friends in a very... More

Old fashioned seats, very small cinemas, and great food and wine. Just sort of adds to the movie experience.

What a delight! This is an intimate, cosy cinema. We enjoyed our film curled up on comfortable leather couches. The building has been beautiful restored and its historic features make you feel like you're experiencing something from many decades ago. Would definitely recommend seeing a film here!

I loved the State Cinema. Real character, with a good list of movies at convenient times. We saw a movie in a small, but beautifully appointed cinema.Very clean and comfortable. I suggest combining a visit to the State with as meal at Capital, about 100 metres away, at 364 Elizabeth Street. Given a half decent movie, you will have had... More

We travelled over 250km one way to see "Calvary", and it was worth it. A funny, sad and touching movie that was rivetting.. Great leather lounges in an intimate theatre holding only 24. Nice architecture, staff and lots of restaurants to eat at nearby plus bar food at their bar. Will come again.
