The State Theatre in North Hobart is one not to be missed. There are several small theatres in the complex where you can choose from the 'movie menu' the list of films that are presently showing. Each theatre has very comfortable seats and what I like about them is that they are spacious allowing arm rest and leg stretch. It... More

How lucky are we that this cinema was saved. The owner has turned it into the most popular venue for watching quality movies. You can visit to enjoy the wonderful bookshop, have a coffee with morning or afternoon cake or enjoy a light lunch or dinner. There are multiple cinemas. We visit often and are never disappointed. It is located... More

I have reviewed the State Cinema before as a 'Mature cinema experience' but I wanted this time to give more attention to their cafe. I often visit the State Cinema Cafe as it is a wonderful place to hold a business meeting, be it a couple of you or a small group. Open from 10.00am with good coffee, tea, snacks... More

The State Cinema in North Hobart is a Tasmanian institution, being more than 100 years old. In recent years extensions have included a great little bookshop and a much larger cafe with seating spread over two floors. There's a blackboard menu with a range of savoury dishes including toasted sandwiches, Thai curries, cheese platters, soup of the day, etc. The... More

This is my favourite cinema in Hobart, very comfortable seating and very good acoustics. With new releases its wise to make a booking first. I really like the fact that you can have a drink or meal before or after the movies as the State Theatre has a café.

What a gem! If you are a cinema goer, this gem is a must, and if you're not, then this is the place to start. Lovely comfortable cute cinemas, take your glass of wine and nibblies from the bar in with you, find a little corner in a cosey chair to sit and relax while you wait for your movie,... More

What better way to spend a few hours on a cold winter's day. With a birthday to celebrate - lovely lunch in the café, then a great movie to watch. A very pleasant time.

Visited to watch a movie with family. Great experience and could take wine into the theatre. The cinema experience was like Village Gold Club with good seats, wine and access to quality food. Recommended if you are visiting Hobart for a few days and the weather is not perfect. North Hobart also has good eating venues for an after cinema... More

I have enjoyed attending this theatre for over 40 years and have recently been disappointed by the more "big business" practice of selling gift voucher tickets that expire. I had been unwell for a couple of months when I was hoping to use the tickets I received for Christmas. I looked at them today, hoping I am physically improving enough... More
