Located in North Hobart, the State is a local independent cinema that has entertained generations of Tasmanians for over 100 years. In addition to eight cinema screens, we also have a boutique bookstore, cafe bar and rooftop cinema. Our cinema is licensed, so you can enjoy a glass of wine while enjoying a movie!

Lovely old theatre revamped with lovely cafe style eatery, good choice of wines, friendly staff and great service. Plenty of spacious seating over two levels and several small and intimate theatres showing both mainstream and off beat movies not showing at regular cinemas. The store at the front, boasts a great selection of books and the theatre hallways have nooks... More

Had a very cultured crowd who behaved very well and more importantly silently during a sold out show. Read some good and reviews of this place before I went and agreed with all of them. Yes expensive cramped trouble parking but still had a great night out in a cool place.

Arriving early I grabbed a table and ordered the savoury muffin. At $6.50 for one, it should've been served with a glass of wine but sadly it was really dry. I didn't complain because we were off to watch a movie. The cinema is well known for its quirkiness but I wish they'd update some of the seating, especially as... More

My partner and I rarely go to The State as every time we have been we get disappointed. However new year new attitude (also being with RACT member we get discounted tickets) we decided to see a movie that would suit the setting of this old iconic cinema. Joy was the choice. Now if you have never been to The... More

Love this cinema in every respect but on this visit the parking and its availability let us down. We arrived early for a 1pm session and the parking at the back of the cinema was full. After waiting for as long as we could we determined that the parking at the back of the cinema is not monitored and that... More

Great films, great staff, great food, great bookstore attached, the fact you can take a glass of wine in with you is a bonus too! Roof top cinema is also fantastic though you will need to check on the day if it's going ahead (Tassie weather is fickle) and although we attended on a warm evening it was still quite... More

We'd been hearing about the Rooftop Cinema at Hobarts State Cinema for some time and while having a quick snack in the cafe we realised there was a session that evening AND (luckily for us) only 2 seats left! The building is a great mix of old and new - neither clashing with the other. We love the view of... More

This wonderful little independent cinema shows a wide variety of films, with great service and a nice bar offering a wide variety of food and drinks. It's so fantastic that the people behind the place have managed to make it work, and it was encouraging on a midweek evening to see so many people enjoying films. Long may it succeed.

This is where I go to see different types of films. I can walk here in half an hour along the back roads to North Hobart and after I finish I can walk into Hobart city for the rest of the day. I am on their email list so once a week I receive their next viewings. There is usually... More

We stopped in the check out the building more than anything, as this is an original cinema that has partial modern glass area. It has a nice relaxed vibe with majority elderly people. We had coffee and a blueberry apple crumble. The coffee was super hot (too hot to drink straight away) it was strong and not bad at all.... More
