Port Douglas, once a sleepy fishing village, is 60km north from Cairns along the Captain Cook Highway. The highway offers the first glimpses of this beautiful area, with stunning views across the water and along the coast. Visitors to this family-friendly, laid-back area can fish, golf, snorkel over the reef, walk through the rainforest or just relax on one of the many beautiful beaches the area is known for. The area is home to over 12,000, but during the tourist seasons the number can reach over three times this amount as tourists take advantage of the tropical climate and average temperatures of 26C. Whether you want to self-drive or take advantage of one of the many tours on offer the Douglas area is easy to navigate and full of interesting attractions. Whatever the holiday there is a hotel, resort, lodge, backpackers or caravan park to suit your budget and needs and most offer pools, kids play areas and beach access. « less

The perfect small town experience in coastal Queensland's primeval rain forest. Small enough to feel cosy and at home yest close enough to all the main attractions to not feel too "out there". A magnificent drive along the coast from Cairns. Just a hop to the Atherton Tablelands, Mossman Gorge and Daintree, all must sees on a trip to the... More

All the locals were friendly and helpful and seemed to genuinely want tourists in their town. Just keep in mind that the tourist info centres aren't volunteers they work for individual companies so weigh up carefully which tours you really want to do as they are expensive.

Port Douglas after several visits has now become our preferred winter holiday destination. Clearly the constant super weather as an alternative to a Melbourne winter is a no brainer. Choice of accomodation varies from backpacker to luxury with the latter quite expensive in high season. It has a great variety of restaurants & the coffee cafes are numerous. The 4... More

I have travelled to Port Douglas every year for the last 5 years, and hope to be back next month, second time in 3 months. The beach is perfect for walking or cycling every day. The view as you walk is amazing. Macrossan St (the Main Street) is relaxed, with plenty of options for coffee and meals, so etching to... More

I now know why Port Douglas is so popular. Fabulous restarunats & bars, Gorgeous Marina. Lots to do from Port Douglas as a base. Plenty of accomodation choices. Tours to book or just relax & enjoy the beach & Marina. Things are a bit pricey here, but if you search around for restaurant deals, you can save money. Most the... More

Port Douglas is a beautiful village. Pretty with just enough to do. There are some great restaurants, lovely shops and a great base to experience the Reef and the Rainforest. You can visit as a family, couple or on your own and feel safe and comfortable. Although its not cheap there are options for everyone.
