Port Douglas, once a sleepy fishing village, is 60km north from Cairns along the Captain Cook Highway. The highway offers the first glimpses of this beautiful area, with stunning views across the water and along the coast. Visitors to this family-friendly, laid-back area can fish, golf, snorkel over the reef, walk through the rainforest or just relax on one of the many beautiful beaches the area is known for. The area is home to over 12,000, but during the tourist seasons the number can reach over three times this amount as tourists take advantage of the tropical climate and average temperatures of 26C. Whether you want to self-drive or take advantage of one of the many tours on offer the Douglas area is easy to navigate and full of interesting attractions. Whatever the holiday there is a hotel, resort, lodge, backpackers or caravan park to suit your budget and needs and most offer pools, kids play areas and beach access. « less

Plenty of great bars and restaurants as well as shops and, of course, the fantastic 4 mile beach. We especially enjoyed the Sunday market with loads of stalls selling a mixture of locally produced goods, tasty snacks and clothes. There were, of course, some stalls selling mass produced touristy goods too.

To fly to Port Douglas from Melbourne is a long flight but very worthwhile. Over the years this township has increased and enlarged so much but still a terrific venue for a restful holiday.

Port Douglas is an ideal spot from which to explore the Great Barrier Reef. Quaint, charming and perfectly situated along miles of sandy beaches.

Beautiful holiday destination. I have traveled around the world and Port Douglas has become a favorite. Clean, well maintained, lovely tree lined streets, great shopping area, beautiful beach and so much to do.

The thing that we like most about Port Douglas besides the reef and rainforest is the friendly smiling nature of everyone we came across. We have been twice and will in all probability go again
