Port Douglas, once a sleepy fishing village, is 60km north from Cairns along the Captain Cook Highway. The highway offers the first glimpses of this beautiful area, with stunning views across the water and along the coast. Visitors to this family-friendly, laid-back area can fish, golf, snorkel over the reef, walk through the rainforest or just relax on one of the many beautiful beaches the area is known for. The area is home to over 12,000, but during the tourist seasons the number can reach over three times this amount as tourists take advantage of the tropical climate and average temperatures of 26C. Whether you want to self-drive or take advantage of one of the many tours on offer the Douglas area is easy to navigate and full of interesting attractions. Whatever the holiday there is a hotel, resort, lodge, backpackers or caravan park to suit your budget and needs and most offer pools, kids play areas and beach access. « less

The first time I went to Australia in 2006, I visited Port Douglas and stayed there for 3 nights. A wonderfully relaxed town with a 4 mile beach. A good selection of restaurants. Took a day trip to the Great Barrier Reef even though there was a Force 6 gale blowing, that didn't deter anyone! Beautiful warm temperature. Highly recommended... More

Port Douglas is a small city about an hour north from Cairns. It is the perfect location for day trips to the Daintree Rainforest. The town centre is chic and pleasant and the weather is warm and humid as it is located in tropical queensland.

Well laid out, nice main Street. Good shops. Great beach. Pity about the weather - when I was there it rained. Gorgeous gardens and plants.

Much more quaint than Cairns - definitely a beach town. Restaurants are good (but pricey) but the main attraction is 4 mile beach, the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree rainforest. Thai place down at marina is great and well priced!

We enjoyed the manageable size and friendliness of the Port Douglas village. The range of shops and restaurants, the Sunday market and ease of parking meant that we spent a lot of time just hanging around. No matter what time of the day the village felt safe and friendly.

Plenty of great bars and restaurants as well as shops and, of course, the fantastic 4 mile beach. We especially enjoyed the Sunday market with loads of stalls selling a mixture of locally produced goods, tasty snacks and clothes. There were, of course, some stalls selling mass produced touristy goods too.

To fly to Port Douglas from Melbourne is a long flight but very worthwhile. Over the years this township has increased and enlarged so much but still a terrific venue for a restful holiday.
