Owner description: Port Douglas is the natural place to holiday in Australia. Port Douglas, once a sleepy fishing village, is 60km north from Cairns along the Captain Cook Highway. The highway offers the first glimpses of this beautiful area, with stunning views across the water and along the coast. Visitors to this family-friendly, laid-back area can fish, golf, snorkel over the reef, walk through the rainforest or just relax on one of the many beautiful beaches the area is known for. The area is home to over 12,000, but during the tourist seasons the number can reach over three times this amount as tourists take advantage of the tropical climate and average temperatures of 26C. Whether you want to self-drive or take advantage of one of the many tours on offer the Douglas area is easy to navigate and full of interesting attractions. Whatever the holiday there is a hotel, resort, lodge, backpackers or caravan park to suit your budget and needs and most offer pools, kids play areas and beach access.

We stayed 3 nights in Port Douglas and 3 in Cairns, I wish we would have spent all 6 nights in Port Douglas. Lots of restaurants and shops. Very quaint. Only issue is that it would have been best to have had restaurant reservations. We went to 3 restaurants one night and all were booked solid. If your north Australia... More

Great place that has developed over the years but more recent development has been at a slower pace.. really relaxing and happy place to visit. Plenty of restaurants and off shore boat cruises. Loved The Sheraton again - so relaxing.

The best way to enjoy Port Douglas is to visit Cairns first. It is then that that the small town feel, lower temperatures and laid back lifestyle really hit home. Port Douglas is a small fishing village that was "found" by a developer and grew into a tourist town. It has both all the positives of that and some of... More

It felt like we never left the big city. The same people, the same cars, the same food, the same attitudes. Food prices were outrageously expensive for what is served up at all the food outlets that we visited ... ice cream bar, sushi takeaway, pub, restaurant, fish and chips. Even though the accommodation was fine (and there is a... More

We absolutely loved Port Douglas. It has a lot of character and has many cute restaurants and bars. Very nice admosphere and a cute little town. Also loved the barrier reef excursion.

A beautiful town on the gorgeous North Queensland coast with lots to do. Plenty of accommodation at various levels, lots of lovely eating places but thankfully NO Macdonalds or Costa - a very wise decision. Great beaches, boat trips to the Great Barrier Reef - the Daintree rainforest, Cape Tribulation etc. People are lovely and friendly, not pretentious and it... More

Our Nat Geo Around-the-World trip chose Port Douglas rather than Cairns likely for all the reasons noted by other reviewers here as a jumping off point for snorkeling in the Barrier Reef. The harbor was lovely, boats rocking lazily in the warm February sun. (Truth in advertising here, we were here several years ago and I am just getting around... More
