The Savannahlander is a unique train journey that starts from Cairns, Australia. Using the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway it winds through he rainforest to the village of Kuranda and beyond. For the day tripper Mareeba is the best destination - with a bus connection back to Cairns via Kuranda. For those wanting a train trip through the Australian outback the train continues on to the end of the line at Forsayth. There are side visits to the Chillagoe caves, Cobbold Gorge and the Undara Lava Tubes available.

A unique experience, 4 days at a relaxed pace and in an informal atmosphere with a few impromptu stops thrown in as you take in various landscapes and climate zones while climbing over 5 mountain ranges. There is abundant wildlife along the way and you get a real taste of the outback along the way and at the overnight stopovers.... More

We have just had a fantastic time on the Savannahlander taking the 4 days/3 nights option from Cairns. I totally agree with Patrick B's review - it is a great 'short break' to take from Cairns, to see the Savannah country of NQ and the wildlife that lives there. Leigh and Wil are great hosts/guides/drivers and full of relevant information... More

You don’t need to be a train buff to enjoy this unique journey into the Australian outback. We spent a joyous 4 days travelling the 850 km return trip between Cairns and Forsayth. It was fascinating to watch the scenery change from the lush, tropical vegetation of Cairns to the sparse, arid grasslands around Forsayth. We travelled as a couple... More

I enjoyed seeing the "real outback" at a price that did not break the bank. The Savannahlander is an extraordinary experience for the diversity of climate regimes it traverses - from hot and dry desert conditions to tropical rainforest. I was rewarded with astonishing views as we descended the mountains back in to Cairns. Absolutely a wonderful time.

This trip was a real adventure into the Australian countryside. We did the 4 day, 3 night return trip from Cairns to Forsayth. Firstly, our train drivers Wil and Leigh deserve special mention. They work hard to ensure you have a wonderful trip. They are lovely young guys, friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. As no other trains use the track past... More

Took the full 4 day trip and tours. Cost for 2 people was $2200 + lunch and teas. Worth every cent. The trip is fabulous, memorable and would do it again combined with the Gulflander. Read other reviews to get the outback flavour of it. Many thanks to Will and Leigh for making it so good. Barron Gorge is a... More

Hi - thank you for your feedback. We have noted your comments and will see if we can incorporate them when we reset things at the end of the season. Chillagoe and Undara are operated by completely separate businesses - I will pass your comments on to the appropriate people and would encourage you to make those sentiments known to... More

The Savannahlander is a great rain ride through wonderful scenery. The train itself is aged and only two carriages. Everyone wants to be in the first carriage and if you are like us people will take your seat whilst you are on a break. The second day we went to the rear of the 2nd carriage and had plenty of... Hi there - thank you so much for your review and feedback. We have discussed this and agree that it sometimes is a bit difficult. Our train does not have allocated seating and occasionally some passengers do take liberties with our open seating policy. Having discussed this with the crew I can report back that managing this is one of... More

Just fantastic. We did this as part of a tour including The Gulflander. The whole tour was well organised with all connections, pickups and accommodation going flawlessly. The tour takes you to parts where the only practical access is by rail. An amusing, informative and occasionally controversial commentary is provided by the drivers. You can sit up front with them... Hey thanks for your review :) Thanks for the feedback - it's one of the hidden parts of our job to organise all the accommodation and transfer so that they all match :) I have passed that on to the back office people and they say thank you very much! (and yes - sitting up the front is cool!) More

The train ride to very interesting places in Central Queensland. The scenery was amazing and the commentary from the train drivers was interesting and informative. The. Excursions to Chillagoe caves, the Undarra lava tubes and the Cobbold Gorge were excellent. A great way to see a very different part of Queensland.
