Using the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway it winds through he rainforest to the village of Kuranda and beyond. For the day tripper Mareeba is the best destination - with a bus connection back to Cairns via Kuranda. For those wanting a train trip through the Australian outback the train continues on to the end of the line at Forsayth. There are side visits to the Chillagoe caves, Cobbold Gorge and the Undara Lava Tubes available. « less

A really enjoyable experience. The train journey was comfortable and relaxing, and the drivers (Wil and Leigh) were entertaining. The accommodation is reasonable. The side tours (Cobbold Gorge and the lava tubes) were well worthwhile. You don't have to be a train buff to enjoy the trip, though any train buff will get a bit more from the experience.

We took the Savannahlander train trip from Bedrock Village, Mt Surprise .... Bedrock buses and guides took us to the rail station where we boarded the Savannahlander for our trip to Einasleigh where they later met us, after a welcome drink at the iconic and quirky Einasleigh Hotel, and returned to Bedrock via Copperfield Gorge and over the dusty trails... This is essentially a "retro" train experience combined with outback north Queensland. The Savannahlander people put together a range of 1, 2, 3 and 4 day tours across outback Queensland that gives you choices of places, destinations and prices to suit most people. Thie tours include accommodation, transfers and travel by this fabulous, fun train.

I just loved this trip and I am a local but everyone should do this trip at least once. The staff on our trip were really helpful, informative and fun. All the meals were excellent apart from the lunch at Mt Surprise, but the train itself was great because it takes you through places that you simply never see by... More

If you are even a 1% train buff this is the trip for you. Have done it twice and want to go again. Its one of those trips that you can do a pub crawl or have ensuite accomodation. Its slow to meduim paced but it goes where no other train goes. The crew are great. Side trips are interesting... More

We travelled from Mount Surprise to Einasleigh on the Savannahlander. The trip was wonderful and the staff were helpful and courteous. Unfortunately the experience was marred for quite a number of the passengers boarding the train at Mount Surprise by the selfish behaviour of a number of the passengers who had obviously been on the train since the previous day.... We planned our FNQ holiday around this train journey. We travelled from Yungaburra, near Atherton to be in Mount Surprise by midday. A relatively easy journey, taking around two and a half hours. The train journey to Einasleigh is slow and steady and a real experience. Good for the kids to get some enjoyment out of something that is not hand... More

First a confession - I like trains. First admonishment - if you have the time DO THIS. I had the pleasure to take the Savannahlander and enjoyed every moment. This is a journey into the Northern Tablelands and a journey back in time. These are two old cars that rumble through life together and in doing so, educate you on... More

We commenced our trip from Cairns with a direct flight to Normanton (very expensive can catch a bus) we then picked up the bus and travelled to Karumba and stayed at the End of the Road Motel which was very good, best sunset almost as good as Broome good modern pub right next door. Next day we boarded the Gulflander... More

Hi Minny, Thanks for taking the time to write a review of the Savannahlander. We agree with you on Cobbold Gorge - it really is worth a visit and one of the nicest we've been to. Glad you enjoyed your stay at Undara. I spoke to a passenger who stayed there last week who had their bacon stolen by a... More
