Description: The Savannahlander is a unique train journey that starts from Cairns...
The Savannahlander is a unique train journey that starts from Cairns, Australia. Using the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway it winds through he rainforest to the village of Kuranda and beyond. For the day tripper Mareeba is the best destination - with a bus connection back to Cairns via Kuranda. For those wanting a train trip through the Australian outback the train continues on to the end of the line at Forsayth. There are side visits to the Chillagoe caves, Cobbold Gorge and the Undara Lava Tubes available.

What a memorable experience this was. We were kept entertained by Will & Leigh for the whole journey. Nothing was too much trouble for them. You can sit in front next to the driver, ask questions along the way. They stop for photos when you want as well as stopping to point out important sights along the way. We stopped... More

4 days on a train?, no, much much more than that. Unbelievable events at every turn. We travelled late in the season and were the only fare paying passengers. Leigh and Wil were in charge as the old diesel unit travels along the single track to Forsayth. Why was the line ever built? - you may wonder, but I will... More

I travelled on the Savannahlander as part of a 9 day Wilderness Challenge Safari. I love old trains and this was a lovely ride. The engineers were wonderful (one of them a true movie star). Most memorable is the Bullock Creek café... this is one of the greatest places for high tea that you will find in the world.

Given the title I've given this review, I'm not going to set out to describe it. It was, quite simply, the trip of (quite a long) lifetime. The accommodation is simple. The track is a bit bumpy. But I wouldn't have missed this for the world. Every aspect was brilliant. That's all. Thanks a million.

When in cairns You must do the four day trip to the hinterland to Forsayth. You travel in a two car railmoter set from cairns to Forsayth, but there is (3) three of train tours,. Which includes one night at Chillagoe caves and town, Cobbold Gorge, and the Undarra Lava caves. But the best part is the train trip. It's... More

Completed the 2 day Savannahlander tour from Forsayth to Cairns as part of a bigger tour. It was a fantastic train experience, the drivers were amazing tour guides and were always stopping the train to point our different things. You also had the opportunity to sit up the front, take photos and chat to the driver as well. Would recommend... More

I have spent a lot of time travelling extensively in the Australian outback and have even spent periods working in seriously isolated places. So for me this was purely about the train trip. And what an awesome trip it was. This is one experience that actually over delivers. Our crew of Will and Hamish did a brilliant job of keeping... More

I did the 4 day run on the Savannahlander and had a great time. The rail motors are moving pieces of history themselves, and the changing scenery gives you an amazing montage of Australia's countryside in those few short days. Something to see and do every day at every stop, and the drivers knowledge of local history and trivia seems... More

We have just returned from the most wonderful trip - A four day 'outback odyssey' on the Savannahlander from Cairns to Cobbold Gorge, the Lava Tubes and Chillagoe where we stayed on each of the three nights but the highlight of the trip were our drivers, commentators and all round entertainers Leigh and Anthony. They are the consummate travel professionals... More
