Using the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway it winds through he rainforest to the village of Kuranda and beyond. For the day tripper Mareeba is the best destination - with a bus connection back to Cairns via Kuranda. For those wanting a train trip through the Australian outback the train continues on to the end of the line at Forsayth. My six year old grandson and I did this journey - our first time away with just the two of us. It was perfect - enough other interests for him to roam, sit next to the drivers, and really see something of the country. There was enough adventure on each of our four days to keep us both interested and... More

Hi there Coasting10, Thanks for the great review - I agree that it's an excellent trip for young people. In fact I brought my 4 year old along last year and he had a ball. It's great that you both had a good time, hopefully we will see you again sometime! Thanks, The Savannahlander More

Thanks to everyone at Savannahlander for such a fantastic day. We caught the train from Cairns to Almaden with our bikes to set off on an adventure. The guys were very careful loading our bikes, gave hilarious yet very informative commentary during the trip, were very friendly & looked after the passengers very well!! The trip itself was gorgeous &... More

Hi there Lesley F, Thanks for the great review - did you know that some of the staff here are super keen cyclists as well? Its not unusual for one of our drivers to take a bike and cycle from Almaden to Chillagoe ! Another great cycle is from Einasleigh to Forsayth if you are ever looking for a great... More

We enjoyed our time on the Savannahlander. The side tours to the Chillagoe Caves, the Undurra Lava Tubes and the Cobald Gorge were excellent and the accommodation at these outback features was excellent.

My wife and I had our first taste of the Savannahlander about five years ago when we took the two day trip out of Cairns to Almaden so we thought we would do the "full monty" the next time and last August we took the six day Savannahlander and Gulflander trip. What a fabulous outback experience this was. A full... More

Quite simply, beautiful and unique. The trip on the train itself was worth going for, but the scenery, accomodations, side trips, and driver commentary were great also. Highly recommended for train enthusiasts, and/or for anyone wanting to see and experience the real Australia without the crowds. Going to places you cant get to any other way, meeting real Aussies, and... More

Last month (June 2014) we travelled on the Savannahlander with visiting friends. We set off from Cairns early morning travelled through to Einasleigh and came back two days later. The trip was memorable, the scenery fantastic, and Hamish and Anthony were great crew - full of information on the history and the local sights. We loved our night at the Almaden... More

A unique outback rail trip through villages and settlements from a bygone era. Brilliant train drivers/guides with non-stop commentary on the geography, history, flora and fauna of the plateau. We are a.couple of grey nomads who experienced an Australian journey which even most Australians have not experienced. One further comment - just don't expect five star luxury!

Thanks for that Warren G, Our drivers certainly do a lot of "training" to get the knowledge of the area! We are glad that you enjoyed your trip - 5-star luxury is not actually one of our tour options as yet, we prefer to call it "an authentic outback experience" .... it may not be 5-star but it is certainly... The bus trip to Normanton from Cairns left at 6.30am on the Monday and proved to be a lot more interesting and les tiring than anticipated. I actually did a six-day Gulflander/Savannahlander experience and have to say that the latter was almost as memorable as the former (which takes up days three-five, the first two days of the six days being the bus trip from Cairns to Karumba (for two nights) because it departs from Forsayth on day 5, travels through the Einasleigh Ranges before arriving...
