Using the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway it winds through he rainforest to the village of Kuranda and beyond. For the day tripper Mareeba is the best destination - with a bus connection back to Cairns via Kuranda. For those wanting a train trip through the Australian outback the train continues on to the end of the line at Forsayth. There are side visits to the Chillagoe caves, Cobbold Gorge and the Undara Lava Tubes available. « less

My wife and completed the Gulflander/ Savanahlander double in early July 2014. The bus trip to Normanton from Cairns left at 6.30am on the Monday and proved to be a lot more interesting and les tiring than anticipated. It gave us a chance to also suss out other peope doing the combined train trip. The two nights in Normanton were... More

I actually did a six-day Gulflander/Savannahlander experience and have to say that the latter was almost as memorable as the former (which takes up days three-five, the first two days of the six days being the bus trip from Cairns to Karumba (for two nights) because it departs from Forsayth on day 5, travels through the Einasleigh Ranges before arriving... Thoroughly enjoyable 4 day trip. Train leaves Cairns at 6:30am on a Wednesday and heads up to Kuranda before turning inland and travelling through the Savannah hinterland to the west and southwest of Cairns. For the two friendly and knowledgable train drivers (Leigh and Hamish on my trip) nothing is too much trouble. As our little train has the track... More

We travelled on the Savanahlander on its final trip of the season. What an experience! It is both a train and travel experience with the most amazing drivers/guides (Hamish and Wil), who not only drive the train, but educate us about the wildlife and the history of outback Australia. They entertained us non-stop and really made the trip so enjoyable.... More

Anthills, scrub, waving grass....... the twin-carriage rail motor grinds to a halt on a deserted track. the engin driver becons to us passengers. A breakdown! No,he's inviting us to step down to see the love-nest of a greater bowerbird, surrounded by gleaming gewgaus and shells. Where else could passengers disembark for a moment to admire a bird-nest or share the engine driver's cabin,a... More

This is return visit to the Savannahlander after a few years and though we had a different crew, Hamish & Will, like their predecessors before them, they offer a local knowledge of the sights and the delights of travelling from Forsayth to Cairns through the rugged Gulf Savannah on this now iconic train. Where else could you travel along away... More

A really enjoyable experience. The train journey was comfortable and relaxing, and the drivers (Wil and Leigh) were entertaining. The accommodation is reasonable. The side tours (Cobbold Gorge and the lava tubes) were well worthwhile. You don't have to be a train buff to enjoy the trip, though any train buff will get a bit more from the experience.

We took the Savannahlander train trip from Bedrock Village, Mt Surprise .... Bedrock buses and guides took us to the rail station where we boarded the Savannahlander for our trip to Einasleigh where they later met us, after a welcome drink at the iconic and quirky Einasleigh Hotel, and returned to Bedrock via Copperfield Gorge and over the dusty trails... This is essentially a "retro" train experience combined with outback north Queensland. The Savannahlander people put together a range of 1, 2, 3 and 4 day tours across outback Queensland that gives you choices of places, destinations and prices to suit most people. Thie tours include accommodation, transfers and travel by this fabulous, fun train.
