This was my first experience snorkelling on the reef. The fish are abundant and one turtle got very curious. A 90 minute ride from Cairns and you're there. Excellent.
Michaelmas Cay is a bird rookery. Common birds here include the Sooty Tern, Lesser and Greater Frigatebirds, Common Noddies and Brown Boobies. The snorkelling is good too at Michaelmas Cay, but even better is Hastings Reef (and much better still is Lady Elliot Island at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef). Several companies travel to Michaelmas Cay. Some... More
went with Sea Star cruises and what a great team they were whilst taking us out on the reef. had lots of fun and had the added bonus of seeing humpback whales and dolphins playing in the sea. The boat was great as held roughly 35 people and that was great as the team could explain and teach you loads.
I took the Passions boat to see the Great Barrier Reef, Michaelmans Cay was the best spot I have snorkeled. So beautiful and got to see tons of fish, stingrays, carpetsharks, and fauna. The coral is beautiful! It was a pretty calm day so no sea turtles or reef sharks, and apparently the turtles take to the Reef when it... More
The Sea Star trip was recommended to us and was one of the best trips we've had to the reef. The crew were excellent. Very enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable. The boat was just the right size for about 35 people, with enough sitting space for all during the journey. It was also nice to have 2 different location stops. The... More
Walk just a few steps from the beach and you snorkeling amongst the coral and marine life, from knee high water to about 2m depth. Little shelter if the wind is anything but easterly but you wont care as youll be blown away with whats on view under water.
Sandy and blue water - niiiice!!! Great bird life and swimming and snorkeling was good! Shame there were tourists there otherwise paradise!!
The long trip was punctuated with instructions, food and drink, so didn't drag. Snorkel sessions were excellent - so much to see. Highlights were the plethora of stunning fish, the giant turtles and the ray. Food on board was good.we did check weather would be ok - sunny day helped keep us comfortable.
