Lake Eacham is an extinct volcano, the crater is filled with rain water; there is a nice rainforest walk around the lake, 3kms long, swimming is enjoyed by both locals and visitors. No crocodiles, no bities of any sort!

Highly recommend a visit and try to stay in the area if you can. We spent two nights at the Lumholtz Lodge which is truly an unique place. Margit (owner) has built a rainforest sanctuary on 100 acres and helps rehabilitate wildlife (wallabies, tree kangaroos, etc..). The kids and us were able to see these animals firsthand and experience her... More

This is one of the best sidetrips we did on our 8 week australia travel. Ther is so much beauty to see up ther and it can be done in a day with a rental car.

We drove down from Cairns by hired vehicle to Atherton. The drive itself is extremely beautiful, with stretches of the road going through rainforest areas. We passed waterfalls and banana plantations on the way as well. We made our way first to the Hou Wang Chinese Temple in a beautiful setting. It is a extremely beautiful sight, with a red... More

We went south and over the ranges. Don't go this way if you don't like windy roads as you wind your way up and over the high mountains. Great views but this part of the trip will take a bit of time as you can't go too fast. Once over the ranges the land is a contrast to the area... More

Often overlooked by holiday makers when in Cairns this is a must see. You can get a little hint if you took the train or Sky cable - but it's much bigger than that. You could go on a bus tour - but the best way to go is rent a car they are cheap and it's easy to navigate.... More

Was a wonderful day exploring waterfalls, sights and scenery with friends in a hired car - was a much cheaper option than the organised tours, and gave us a lot more freedom to go where we wanted to go.

Best kept secret is the GOLDEN DROP MANGO WINE. Hired a car and the roads are so good to drive on. One of us (two ladies) and one navigates .. worth it

This area is so different from Cairns & Northern beaches. To really visit FNQ I would recommend including a trip to the Atherton tablelands (Highlands) in your itinerary.
