Owner description: Escape the summer heat at one of Cairns' best known landmarks, the Esplanade Lagoon. Set on the Cairns foreshore overlooking Trinity Inlet, the 4800 sq metre saltwater swimming lagoon offers locals and tourists a year round safe swimming location. Saltwater is pumped from the inlet and filtered through a state of the art filtration and chlorination system, to meet Australian Standards. The kids can enjoy the sandy edges, build sand castles and play in shallow water. On the other side of the Lagoon, visitors can lounge on the timber decks in moderate shade. Shady trees, landscaped gardens and open spaces all contribute to the leisurely atmosphere on the Esplanade The Lagoon is open 6am - 9pm Thursday - Tuesday, Midday - 9pm Wednesday all year round. While you are on the Cairns Esplanade why not check out the Cottage Industry Market, 8am - 4pm every Saturday, in the Plaza just next to the Lagoon. Why not enjoy the weekend's live music featuring local bands with the stage set up next to the Lagoon. The Cairns Esplanade also boasts Beach Volleyball Courts, Bouldering Park, Skate Park, BBQs, Active Living Fitness Classes, Muddy's Playground, Funship Playgrounds and so much more, all free for casual use. After seeing The state of The ocean in Cairns, i was very disappointed that you can't swim there at all. The lagoon is a great option For a dip on a hot day :)

This artificial lagoon offers a clear water alternative to the nearby beaches which are all too often cloudy due to the amount of sand stirred up there. Between 10am and 2pm there is a noticeable lessening of small children so slap on the sunscreen and have some fun.

The lagoon is a family favourite when the grandkids come to stay. It is safe, clean and fun place for kids of all ages to come and cool off. Good bar b que facilities and tables in the shade. Lots of great eating places within walking distance if a bar b que is not your style.

The swimming lagoon has been a "Godsend" for tourists and locals alike. As anyone who's ever visited the Cairns Esplanade knows; you can't swim in the ocean even if it's not stinger season and the swimming lagoon is just a wonderful place to take the kids, or for visitors to go and "hang out" for a few hours cooling down... I am a Cairns local but as you can imagine living in such a beautiful place we get lots of family and friends visiting. Cairns city has no beach so the lagoon is popular with all ages. The water is warm, the landscaping is attractive and the position looking out towards the bay, mountains and the ships leaving Trinity Inlet.... More
