Escape the summer heat at one of Cairns' best known landmarks, the Esplanade Lagoon. Set on the Cairns foreshore overlooking Trinity Inlet, the 4800 sq metre saltwater swimming lagoon offers locals and tourists a year round safe swimming location. Saltwater is pumped from the inlet and filtered through a state of the art filtration and chlorination system, to meet Australian Standards. The kids can enjoy the sandy edges, build sand castles and play in shallow water. On the other side of the Lagoon, visitors can lounge on the timber decks in moderate shade. Shady trees, landscaped gardens and open spaces all contribute to the leisurely atmosphere on the Esplanade The Lagoon is open 6am - 9pm Thursday - Tuesday, Midday - 9pm Wednesday all year round. While you are on the Cairns Esplanade why not check out the Cottage Industry Market, 8am - 4pm every Saturday, in the Plaza just next to the Lagoon. Why not enjoy the weekend's live music featuring local bands with the stage set up next to the Lagoon. The Cairns Esplanade also boasts Beach Volleyball Courts, Bouldering Park, Skate Park, BBQs, Active Living Fitness Classes, Muddy's Playground, Funship Playgrounds and so much more, all free for casual use. Come along and enjoy!

Nice place to cool down.

Very clean and well maintained. Could do with more shade, so take plenty of sunscreen. The council has free Wi Fi in and and around the lagoon.

Great way you spend all day cooling off in the lagoon. May be not as great as other beaches around Australia but still a good place to spend the day. And what been better it's in the heart of the city!!!

We had an overnight stay in Cairns while on a cruise and really enjoyed a swim in this beautiful lagoon. It's very clean, not overcrowded, lockers are available to store your valuables while you go in for a dip. Dotted around the lagoon are plenty of trees to sit under to get some shade before or after your swim. There... More

An amazing addition to Cairns! It's a free, clean, luxury swimming pool in the city center. What's not to love?

Great fun with depth for all ages (from very shallow to 1.5 m deep). Lit up at night with life guard on duty till 9pm (at least while we were there). Sandy area too if you enjoy that.

Great if you have them and you want them to have a bit of safe fun in the water for some time. Otherwise, best avoided

We were delighted to find this big swimming pool on the edge of the ocean when we returned from visiting the great barrier reef. There is a change room and it was free. It has a beach atmosphere. Good for a short dip before continuing on.
