Escape the summer heat at one of Cairns' best known landmarks, the Esplanade Lagoon. Set on the Cairns foreshore overlooking Trinity Inlet, the 4800 sq metre saltwater swimming lagoon offers locals and tourists a year round safe swimming location. Saltwater is pumped from the inlet and filtered through a state of the art filtration and chlorination system, to meet Australian Standards. The kids can enjoy the sandy edges, build sand castles and play in shallow water. On the other side of the Lagoon, visitors can lounge on the timber decks in moderate shade. Shady trees, landscaped gardens and open spaces all contribute to the leisurely atmosphere on the Esplanade The Lagoon is open 6am - 9pm Thursday - Tuesday, Midday - 9pm Wednesday all year round. While you are on the Cairns Esplanade why not check out the Cottage Industry Market, 8am - 4pm every Saturday, in the Plaza just next to the Lagoon. Why not enjoy the weekend's live music featuring local bands with the stage set up next to the Lagoon. The Cairns Esplanade also boasts Beach Volleyball Courts, Bouldering Park, Skate Park, BBQs, Active Living Fitness Classes, Muddy's Playground, Funship Playgrounds and so much more, all free for casual use. Come along and enjoy!

We could have spend all day in this area! There was a market on the day we went (which was a Saturday) and there were people everywhere on the grass area (with some shade provided by trees) surrounding the man made swimming lagoon. The pool looks fresh and clean and has lovely white sand. There is a little cafe as... More

The lagoon was refreshing and clean. The views are spectacular. I enjoyed tanning and staying cool and people watching. The mudflats are interesting to see and the sun rises and sun downs are amazing.

An awesomely unique experience. A great way to get cool down in the heat of North Queensland. Fun for people with all ages. Lots of restaurants and bars along the Esplanade too.

Being a local it is great to have places you can take the family that allows both adults and kids to have a good time. The kids LOVE going to the Lagoon and we always take a picnic and make a day of it. You can swim, just relax or go for a walk along esplanade. Always have a good... More

We got there before 8am and could swim 40m laps across before the crowds arrived. Beautiful clean, clear water and well maintained surrounds. Clean toilets and showers xlnt. Always the first place we head when visiting cairns !

We visited in winter, so it wasn't too hot and we didn't really need to chill out by the pool. It is mostly frequented by travellers and young people, so you are surrounded by an 18-30s crowd most of the time. It's essential in the summer, but worth only a paddle in winter.

The swimming lagoon is an excellent spot for families to enjoy themselves and at the same time get the sun and wind that comes with a beachside location.

Nice place, very clean, not to crowded. The lagoon is very enjoyable when the sun is striking down on cairns.

It's good for relaxing and a dip to cool down. It gets very busy with people though. As a solo traveller it was easy to find a spot for just yourself. If you were with a group you'd probably struggle to find space close to the water at peak times.
