Escape the summer heat at one of Cairns' best known landmarks, the Esplanade Lagoon. Set on the Cairns foreshore overlooking Trinity Inlet, the 4800 sq metre saltwater swimming lagoon offers locals and tourists a year round safe swimming location. Saltwater is pumped from the inlet and filtered through a state of the art filtration and chlorination system, to meet Australian Standards. The kids can enjoy the sandy edges, build sand castles and play in shallow water. On the other side of the Lagoon, visitors can lounge on the timber decks in moderate shade. Shady trees, landscaped gardens and open spaces all contribute to the leisurely atmosphere on the Esplanade The Lagoon is open 6am - 9pm Thursday - Tuesday, Midday - 9pm Wednesday all year round. While you are on the Cairns Esplanade why not check out the Cottage Industry Market, 8am - 4pm every Saturday, in the Plaza just next to the Lagoon. Why not enjoy the weekend's live music featuring local bands with the stage set up next to the Lagoon. The Cairns Esplanade also boasts Beach Volleyball Courts, Bouldering Park, Skate Park, BBQs, Active Living Fitness Classes, Muddy's Playground, Funship Playgrounds and so much more, all free for casual use. Come along and enjoy!

The Esplanade is nice. We don't swim in pools, but it was fun to see others enjoying themselves in the very large wading pools there. Clean area. We stayed right across the street and our balcony overlooked the Esplanade. It was cool.

The lagoon is a very well used attraction, most days there are hundreds if not thousands of visitors. The surrounding grass areas are a favourite sun-bathing spot. The pool itself had just been cleaned on the day we went (Wednesday) and was just warm enough to take a swim (end of May). There are showers and lockers to use.

This us a boring place no water slides only drinking and smoking backpackers. Sometimes a live band is playing which unfortunately attracts more smoking and drinking backpackers...

This swimming area is absolutely brilliant. It is situated right at the end if the harbour with bbq areas and table and chairs. The area is under life guard supervision and it is divided into several areas by depth for toddlers and then the main area for swimming. There is a kiosk, change rooms with showers and lockers available. The area is kept... More

Gorgeous and free all year around especially in Winter when it is still warm enough to swim. I visit here frequently with my husband, friends and niece and nephew and we enjoy it every time. Markets are close by and free music is normally playing on weekends.

Lagoon is beautiful but as local, we wouldn't go in there to swim as there are lots of backpackers using it. Worry about the cleanness.

This is a great place to come to cool down on a hot summers day, well in Cairns it doesn't really get that cold so you can wade around most of the year, shallow end for the young ones and a not to deep deep end for the adults. We visit here quite often.

What an idea! A public area for people to swim that is safe. I imagine that if you had small children that you would feel better about your children swimming here , rather than on the nearby beach where there could be stingers. The safety aspect is brilliant. There is also a lifesaver on duty during daylight hours. AND the... More
