Escape the summer heat at one of Cairns' best known landmarks, the Esplanade Lagoon. Set on the Cairns foreshore overlooking Trinity Inlet, the 4800 sq metre saltwater swimming lagoon offers locals and tourists a year round safe swimming location. Saltwater is pumped from the inlet and filtered through a state of the art filtration and chlorination system, to meet Australian Standards. The kids can enjoy the sandy edges, build sand castles and play in shallow water. On the other side of the Lagoon, visitors can lounge on the timber decks in moderate shade. Shady trees, landscaped gardens and open spaces all contribute to the leisurely atmosphere on the Esplanade The Lagoon is open 6am - 9pm Thursday - Tuesday, Midday - 9pm Wednesday all year round. While you are on the Cairns Esplanade why not check out the Cottage Industry Market, 8am - 4pm every Saturday, in the Plaza just next to the Lagoon. Why not enjoy the weekend's live music featuring local bands with the stage set up next to the Lagoon. The Cairns Esplanade also boasts Beach Volleyball Courts, Bouldering Park, Skate Park, BBQs, Active Living Fitness Classes, Muddy's Playground, Funship Playgrounds and so much more, all free for casual use. Come along and enjoy!

Cairns is unusual in that there is no beach as it is more of a tidal estuary with mudflats when the tide goes out. Instead there is a wonderful lagoon laid out with sand, grass and concrete to laze about and watch the world go by and a pool with varying depths for all standards of swimmers and water features,... There is no beach around so they made this artificial one... Good but over crowded... Best during evening time with ocean view... And after you can walk around at Esplanade which has everything you need in cairns....

This is an unbelievably great place. The water is great, there are lifeguards there, and barbeques, toilet facilities and shops very nearby.

A lovely, clean lagoon which was big enough for a large amount of people without being in each others way. 2 lifeguards watched the pool all day (until 9pm while we were there) so there was no need to feel concerned. The depth went from 0.4 to 1.5m so suitable for children and adults. The lagoon looked over the ocean... More

Theres no crocodiles or stingers and there are life guards. Very nice surrounds. It was crowded when we visited but very welcome relief from the heat.

Considering Cairns is on mudflats this is a great idea. Very popular with local families and tourists alike. Brilliant idea to have built it and totally free

The attraction is not nature. Its the lawn with live music or the over abundance of people in the man made water feature. Little kids seem to love it. Adults soak in it. It wasn't for me. Palm cove (small town up the road seemed more what I was looking for.

On a hot day, even if it's raining, a bit cloudy, or dark clouds further north, the lagoon is brilliant. We took our cousins from UK who went back three times, and even for one night swim ( open until 9pm). For them, the warmth was such a novel experience. The change rooms are very clean, and there are free... More

This is the center of my visit to Cairns. If you want a secluded beach, ignore this spot. It is ideally suited to families. Regardless, there are so many points of interest radiating from this spot you can start here and explore. The breezy 6 to 7 pm walk down the esplanade boardwalk leads here. After some shorebird watching your... More

Given there is no beach in Cairns, the local council did a marvelous job in creating this large lagoon! So many people tourist and local alike would be using this pool throughout the day. Definitely something free for everyone to do for a good couple of hours.
