Escape the summer heat at one of Cairns' best known landmarks, the Esplanade Lagoon. Set on the Cairns foreshore overlooking Trinity Inlet, the 4800 sq metre saltwater swimming lagoon offers locals and tourists a year round safe swimming location. Saltwater is pumped from the inlet and filtered through a state of the art filtration and chlorination system, to meet Australian Standards. The kids can enjoy the sandy edges, build sand castles and play in shallow water. On the other side of the Lagoon, visitors can lounge on the timber decks in moderate shade. Shady trees, landscaped gardens and open spaces all contribute to the leisurely atmosphere on the Esplanade The Lagoon is open 6am - 9pm Thursday - Tuesday, Midday - 9pm Wednesday all year round. While you are on the Cairns Esplanade why not check out the Cottage Industry Market, 8am - 4pm every Saturday, in the Plaza just next to the Lagoon. Why not enjoy the weekend's live music featuring local bands with the stage set up next to the Lagoon. The Cairns Esplanade also boasts Beach Volleyball Courts, Bouldering Park, Skate Park, BBQs, Active Living Fitness Classes, Muddy's Playground, Funship Playgrounds and so much more, all free for casual use. Come along and enjoy!

We enjoyed playing by the lagoon... A lot of space for tanning on sand or grass. Great place for families. Water was clean and deep in places. Wish we would have packed a picnic! Best of all, no crocs or stingers!

I love what they have done with Cairns. The esplanade is a great place to catch up with friends and family, take a dip in between sightseeing and the markets

Went to the lagoon to meet some friends. Large clean and well maintained area for all walks of life to enjoy. Has plenty of grass area and small sandy area to laze on. Water looked clean but I did not venture in on this day. Toilet facilities are kept clean and there is plenty of bins around to get rid... More

Nice area to walk around but a pool that size makes you question how clean it is. With the amount of children in it, I can imagine there is quite a bit of urine inside. Interesting....

Being a local we tend not to utilise this great spot, it's only recently that we have started going down on a regular basis to spend the afternoon/evening, with plenty of Bbqs and change rooms for after your dip in the lagoon this really is a great spot to watch the world go by

This was without exception the best place to visit for free in Cairns, you cannot swim in the Ocean due to the nasties but this is much better, plenty to do for all ages, with morning exercise groups, kids are well catered for in the kids end of the lagoon. Great shady spot and just across the road are all... More
