Eye opener by the river

Didn't get to go inside as I saw this whilst on the CityCat Ferry. I was quietly amazed at this beautiful, grand old building as we passed by.

If you want to see a heritage-style building, this is a great example. It is now managed by the University of Queensland and hosts conferences, meetings, weddings and events. There is a great restaurant on the lower floor which spills out onto a courtyard overlooking the Story Bridge and Brisbane River. A more ideal setting would be hard to find.

This place is free to enter and if you love old blgs and old architecture then come on in. It also has a reasonable cafe and bar, with seats outside to enjoy the water experience.

Visited as part of Brisbane Open House although I have attended a couple of dealer shows in years gone by this is definitely a piece of history. Built in the late 1880's it was standing unused about a century later as the Customs staff had moved out and was restored by Qld University almost back to original but leaving elements... More

A nice building to admire from the river promenade, its one of the old customs buildings of Brisbane. There is a couple of food outlets around the place and the hall its easily accessible but with not much to see. Just a photo and move on....

Whilst it is an impressive piece of architecture, I would only suggest a 10 - 15 minute stop, if you are on a city tour. Other than inspecting the interior there is very little to do. There is a bar and restaurant underneath the main function room, however it is very expensive and generally only for the well to do.... More

Attended a function here recently. The venue is stunning. The service was great but the food took way to long to be served and it was really quite average - especially when considering the price of the tickets. Definitely not the best venue in town for a function but worth a look-see.

We went for a concert this morning at Customs House. It was a fantastic concert comprising of only wind instruments. We had a pleasant surprise after the concert. We were invited to a free guided tour of Customs House. The old gentlemen who showed us around was oozing with knowledge. It was a place where all the ships that came... More

If you are planning on any form of event at this venue, be very careful about the booking details and make certain that you are sure it is going ahead before handing over any money. We recently had to cancel a sizable event due to unforeseen family circumstances which were entirely ignored and we have lost the entire deposit of... More

So called because of the lantern shaped tops on the newel posts. The Customs House was fully restored in the '90s including a complete reconstruction of the central staircase from locally milled timbers. Craftsmen worked from original plans and designs found in the archives of the State Library to precisely replicate the original. If you appreciate a building with history,... More
