The pictures are just rocks and trees and scrub ... but something magical happens when you see this land in person. No trip to Australia should be complete without it. GO!!

The Larapinta trail leaves from the old Telegraph Station near Alice Springs. The trail crosses over the rail line, which takes the passenger train the Ghan between Adelaide and Darwin, as it snakes its ways into the foothills of the West MacDonnell Ranges. It finishes 223 kilometres later at the summit of Mt Sonder. Book in with World Expeditions who... More

For the outdoorsy sort of person, this is a must. Even if you can only hike one section or part of one section, the Larapinta trail should be on everyone's list. In Alice Spings, trail maps are available for purchase. The maps will guide planning for longer hikes, indicating where the support facilities (shelters, sleeping platforms, water and grills) are... An absolutely beautiful walk through every changing landscape and past cultural sites such as ocre pits. Great for short walk or a hike of several days.

Seems you're not supposed to ride this trail (but I did the first 10 KMs early in the morning and there appeared to be other bike tracks on it??!) I was on a long wheelbase cruiser with no suspension but would have loved to have done it on my hard tail from home - bike hire charges are ridiculous (or... More

Thank you for your review. There is only a small section on Section 1 of the Larapinta Trail that is open to both walkers and bike riders and that is from the Alice Springs Telegraph Station to the Geoff Moss bridge at the Stuart Highway. West of the Stuart highway bike riding on the Larapinta Trail is prohibited. Please refer... More

There are several sections of the trail that can be travelled either as day hikes or as the entire journey. Some of the day hikes have some fantastic scenery and link some great landmarks such as Simspons Gap etc

Boring landscape, buffel grass everywhere, hardly any wildlife or birds..... If you compare to the more scenic landscape of Europe and the tons of wildlife more over there you will change your mind.
