Mt Gillen is just a few kms out of the town centre. The walk to the base of the mountain is pleasant and has a well worn track. Once you pass through the fence line the ascent begins. The majorIty of the walk up is relatively easy with a number of nature pause points. The last quarter of the climb... More

Don't under estimate this walk. Take plenty of water. Have good sturdy boots. Protect against the sun. We set off at 3 pm. A pleasant walk with a gentle steady climb most of the way. There is a short steep scramble to get up onto the ridge. Took about an hour to reach the trig station on top. Would have... More

After the second tour guide suggested Mt. Gillen I went there on my last day in Alice Springs. It's a steep climb but absolutely worth it: The view is amazing. Also saw a family of rock wallabys.

Mount Gillen doesn't only have a good view from it, it is also great to look. Didn't make it all the way to the top as I did not take appropriate footwear would advise wearing joggers or hiking shoes

I am a big sunset stalker. So, contrary to suggestions that I should go to Mt. Gillen at sunrise, I went to check out the sunset. And it was truly amazing. Its a moderately strenuous hike to the base for those who are not used to hiking. The last part is basically rock climbing. Totally worth it. There were many... More

Nice little local favourite hike, close to town, steep and shaly in places so wear good shoes. Some rock scrambling required at the top. Awesome views, highly recommended.

If you're not very athletic you will find the walk a challenge, but every time you take a break you turn around and see the amazing scenery around you. Once on top full 360 degrees view of Alice Springs. Highly recommend for the view is priceless

Did this walk this afternoon - as others have said - this is unmarked and not maintained with many slippery rocks but well worth the efforts - the view is we some, strongly recommend but allow plenty of time.

What a great way to spend a morning on a clear day in Alice Springs! Drive down to Flynn's grave and you'll see a path going westwards from it. You'll soon see a gate on the path, which will confirm you are on the right way. You'll reach the foot of the mountain on a flat surface and then will... More

The walk to Mount Gillen starts from the John Flynn memorial site (its where his ashes were scattered) on Larapinta Drive (6 kms west from town) , the walk progresses through Acacia bushland for 500 meters before rising along a narrow eroded track to a saddle , then it becomes steep as you approach the vertical walls of the range....
