The ferry ride is worth the trip and was interesting. However, not sure the desination is that interesting. We did a walk around and found somewhere to have lunch before heading back to the ferry. Would not want to stay there for long. More

Bias report here as we have a caravan on the river. It is the most beautiful place, peacefully quiet despite the V8 ski boats which rule the river. Not a place to go if you have a short stay in Sydney or potentially a long one!!!!!! If you don't own a boat or have a friend who does a trip... More

ANy part of the Hawkesbury River area is beautiful. It is a large area and you can drive down a spectacular winding road to Wisemans Ferry town/crossing and have a great meal at the old pub, stay in a decent hotel and walk early morning along the parklands to the riverfront. Or explore by boat the bays and islands. Parts... More

It is slow flowing and fairly muddy. The vegetation on the sides is lush. House boats can be hired. It is nice to picnic beside. More

We lived in Sydney and owned a 6.3m boat. Using a boat you get to see the best of the river from the river. From the Lions Head up to Akuna Bay is a fabulous stretch of river with secluded inlets, open BBQ beaches (only in designated places) and the flora and fauna is abundant. Rocks have been carved by... We set off from Ferndale Retreat at Lower Portland to explore the middle Hawkesbury, Colo & MacDonald Rivers. Cute little Ferry for just 3 cars at Lower Portland to cross the Hawkesbury. History of places like Wisemans Ferry, Convict construction of Great North Road, St Albans, Ebenezer More

The Hawkesbury River runs along the northern edge of Sydney. Taking a boat trip along it (own boat, hired or a ferry), you can view the wonderful sandstone outcrops and original eucalypt forests. It is like taking a trip back in time to pre-European Sydney. Can be reached from many different points: train to Hawkesbury Station, car to Brooklyn or... More
