He had heard of a "Big Pineapple" in Hawaii and thought that something big would definitely stop traffic. With assistance of 1200 pounds and local engineer, Alan Chapman, who set about designing the giant banana by cutting the best looking banana he could find into 40 pieces and developing plans from which builders could work from, the Big Banana could become a reality. Builder Alan Harvey started the construction in September 1964 with the work to be completed before Christmas. The biggest banana in the world was officially opened on December 22 that year. Not long after, John Enevoldson joined as a partner and they expanded with 20 more plantation acres, a shop, cafe and a larger car park. In 1968 John Landi retired and sold his share to John Enevoldson who continued building the business until 1988 when it was sold to Horticulture World, which was part owned by local businessman Bob Johnston. Bob continued expanding the Big Banana into an educational showcase before undergoing a $30 million redevelopment that re opened in June 1989. Disaster struck and 12 months later the big banana went into provisional liquidation, though still trading until Mr Kevin Ruby, seeing huge potential in the complex, purchased it in 1993. The Big Banana now boasts The Banana Slip Water Park (Australia's first 3 story high inflatable waterslide - the biggest in the world), Ice Skating Rink, Wild Toboggan Ride, Going Bananas Cafe, Gift and Souvenir shop, Candy Kitchen, Sunset Lakes Nursery, "The World of Bananas" multimedia theatre experience, plantation and packing shed tour and in September 2013 a state-of-the-art Laser Tag arena! Great place to visit with the kids with lasertag, tobogganing and ice skating as some of the activities, over 5s are well catered for. One way to lessen the impact on the wallet.....check with the toboggan station first to buy your tickets...they have a deal for the activities mentioned.....much cheaper. Make sure to look in at the old style lolly... More

The little documentary is a bit dated but very Informative! Gift shop is expensive and the candy shop was unattended as they were too busy out the back smoking. Staff at actual big banana were lovely. A shame can't do the train ride any more

You can't visit Coffs without stopping at the Big Banana! We came we saw, it was a tad pricey for souvenirs & food and I probably expected more unusual banana food items but the Toboggan ride was the best part!

Having passed & stopped more times then I can remember I think the BB is past it's prime. The young kids may still get a kick out of it but it's mainly a coffee shop/cafe nowadays. The old days of the working banana plantation are long gone as are most of the plantings around Coffs I fear ? As a... More

This is a pleasant place for a fine day. You can walk through a banana plantation to a high point with a view down to the ocean. There is a short film with plenty of information about banana growing. The decor of the cafe is not particularly appealing but the coffee was good.

Hi Lorraine, Thanks for the review, we're glad to hear that you enjoyed your day with us and the coffee. We have a cafe refurbishment planned for the very near future, so I hope you have a chance to drop in again and let us know what you think. It's expected to be finished by the end of the year.... On our drive to Sydney we made this short stop. It was interesting to see all the banana plantations and have lots of banana products. Did a short tour around. Good for the kids to see too. Mainly a good stopoff for some snacks.

Hi Jane, Thanks for the review. Did you know that we had ice skating, laser tag, toboggan ride, candy making kitchen and a theatre and tour experience on-site? The kids would probably love most of these if you have time next time you're passing through. We hope to see you again soon! More

Australia has the big Mango, Avocado, Barramudi, crocodile and big Banana. These big attractions are usually interesting for about 30 seconds. Good for a quick leg stretch but be wary of the tourist shop there as it is rather expensive and average. Give it 3-5 minutes max.

Michael L, General Manager at Big Banana, responded to this review

Thanks very much for the review. Were you aware that we have a lot of other activities on-site including laser tag, toboggan ride, water park, ice skating, candy making kitchen and a theatre and tour experience? We do have a fair amout of signage around the park showing this, but it still can be overlooked considering we are on 45... More

We were in Woolgoolga for a weekend and passed the Big Banana on the way. Decided to pop in for a look...not much point really! Just take a look and a photo as you drive past. -Over-priced cafeteria-like food served in a grubby dining hall ($3.95 for a banana dipped in chocolate and then frozen...really??!) -Tacky, over-priced gift shop. -Filthy,... it is just a big banana next to Pacific Highway...You can have a glimpse when driving past. Had a coffee at the Cafe. It was better than expected since the cafe looked more like a food court
