He had heard of a "Big Pineapple" in Hawaii and thought that something big would definitely stop traffic. With assistance of 1200 pounds and local engineer, Alan Chapman, who set about designing the giant banana by cutting the best looking banana he could find into 40 pieces and developing plans from which builders could work from, the Big Banana could become a reality. Builder Alan Harvey started the construction in September 1964 with the work to be completed before Christmas. The biggest banana in the world was officially opened on December 22 that year. Not long after, John Enevoldson joined as a partner and they expanded with 20 more plantation acres, a shop, cafe and a larger car park. In 1968 John Landi retired and sold his share to John Enevoldson who continued building the business until 1988 when it was sold to Horticulture World, which was part owned by local businessman Bob Johnston. Bob continued expanding the Big Banana into an educational showcase before undergoing a $30 million redevelopment that re opened in June 1989. Disaster struck and 12 months later the big banana went into provisional liquidation, though still trading until Mr Kevin Ruby, seeing huge potential in the complex, purchased it in 1993. The Big Banana now boasts The Banana Slip Water Park (Australia's first 3 story high inflatable waterslide - the biggest in the world), Ice Skating Rink, Wild Toboggan Ride, Going Bananas Cafe, Gift and Souvenir shop, Candy Kitchen, Sunset Lakes Nursery, "The World of Bananas" multimedia theatre experience, plantation and packing shed tour and in September 2013 a state-of-the-art Laser Tag arena! We have visited the Big Banana a few times over the years, both with our children and most recently as a retired couple. We visited this time for morning tea & a trip to the Candy shop. The restaurant and facilities have gone down hill since our last visit. The food and service was average and the bathroom facilities were... More

This was our third visit to the Big Banana. It is well worth a look when in Coffs Harbour. This visit we had a few rides on the downhill tobogan. Its good fun and the kids always enjoy it.

I have coordinated a full day for over 90 teenagers (15 to 16 year olds) for the last 4 years at the Big Banana. The crew are amazing and very professional. We start with an iceskating session then a walk up the hill to the water park. After/during the BBQ lunch, kids can opt to do some toboggan rides and... More

We hadn't been to the big banana in over 6 years, and it has not changed!!! Looks very run down and needs a big facelift. In saying that the kids loved it! They had a banana spilt which was very yummy while we both a had a milk shake. Great service! We then went and watched them make candy which... More

Visit the lolly shop at the Big Banana and watch the lollies being made by hand, it was quite incredible and a big surprise. Rode the tobboggins, which was fun and make sure you save your appetite for a banana smoothie at the cafe...delicious!

Have been visiting Big Banana for 40 or 50 years. It used to be very good, and there was always something for all ages. However it is now looking tired. There were very few people there and that should sound warning bells for the operators. We visited on a Monday morning for a coffee and a pit stop. The place... More
