He had heard of a "Big Pineapple" in Hawaii and thought that something big would definitely stop traffic. With assistance of 1200 pounds and local engineer, Alan Chapman, who set about designing the giant banana by cutting the best looking banana he could find into 40 pieces and developing plans from which builders could work from, the Big Banana could become a reality. Builder Alan Harvey started the construction in September 1964 with the work to be completed before Christmas. The biggest banana in the world was officially opened on December 22 that year. Not long after, John Enevoldson joined as a partner and they expanded with 20 more plantation acres, a shop, cafe and a larger car park. In 1968 John Landi retired and sold his share to John Enevoldson who continued building the business until 1988 when it was sold to Horticulture World, which was part owned by local businessman Bob Johnston. Bob continued expanding the Big Banana into an educational showcase before undergoing a $30 million redevelopment that re opened in June 1989. Disaster struck and 12 months later the big banana went into provisional liquidation, though still trading until Mr Kevin Ruby, seeing huge potential in the complex, purchased it in 1993. The Big Banana now boasts The Banana Slip Water Park (Australia's first 3 story high inflatable waterslide - the biggest in the world), Ice Skating Rink, Wild Toboggan Ride, Going Bananas Cafe, Gift and Souvenir shop, Candy Kitchen, Sunset Lakes Nursery, "The World of Bananas" multimedia theatre experience, plantation and packing shed tour and in September 2013 a state-of-the-art Laser Tag arena! Love lunch and photo opportunities. A great stop over heading north from Sydney or heading back home. Can't wait for the Mini Golf!

This is actually several attractions in one space. Some of these are more catered to people with older children or adults. The Water Park is good but we felt everything was a little overpriced when you're paying for anyone over two years old. They do allow spectators for free which was good.

We felt that with the activity offerings, this place was more geared to o/seas tourists and tourists with young to teenage children.

You have not lived until you've had a frozen banana. The Big Banana ain't that big anymore, but it's still an Icon! If you are on the road and need a nibble, then come here just so you can say you have.

We took our 10yr 9yr 4 yr and 1yr old kids and they loved it. We have since been quite a few times. Lots of fun to be had. Kids liked watching candy being made in the candy shop (&tasting), waterslides were great fun along with paintball and all the other fun things to do. Definitely worth the visit

I have seen many of the big things, and its often something you just enjoy doing that one time. They have really good frozen bananas covered in chocolate though.

We stopped in here because we had heard so much about it. Very disappointing. We thought we would have something to eat and drink but service was very slow, the cafe felt cold and uninviting. We had to wait well over 10 minutes for our banana smoothies and there were hardly any customers. The attendants had no hair covering. When... More

Good place to stop, good food, enough room to stretch your legs and give the kids a run around; photo opportunity for family holiday album with a big thing. Great Candy shop.

Big Banana is a famous attraction, it was a good stopover on a trip - I had a French backpacker also visiting Australia and he was quite happy to see another "BIG" thing on the road ;-) We also had a couple of Big Banana Birgers in the cafe - just like a real burger but with a piece of... More

My young teenager and his younger brother had a great time playing laser tag. We had a fair few rounds, then went on the toboggan and had a session at the ice skating rink. We also stopped in at the lolly shop, saw a demo and got heaps of ribbon candy. It was a fun day, for sure. I so... More
