He had heard of a "Big Pineapple" in Hawaii and thought that something big would definitely stop traffic. With assistance of 1200 pounds and local engineer, Alan Chapman, who set about designing the giant banana by cutting the best looking banana he could find into 40 pieces and developing plans from which builders could work from, the Big Banana could become a reality. Builder Alan Harvey started the construction in September 1964 with the work to be completed before Christmas. The biggest banana in the world was officially opened on December 22 that year. Not long after, John Enevoldson joined as a partner and they expanded with 20 more plantation acres, a shop, cafe and a larger car park. In 1968 John Landi retired and sold his share to John Enevoldson who continued building the business until 1988 when it was sold to Horticulture World, which was part owned by local businessman Bob Johnston. Bob continued expanding the Big Banana into an educational showcase before undergoing a $30 million redevelopment that re opened in June 1989. Disaster struck and 12 months later the big banana went into provisional liquidation, though still trading until Mr Kevin Ruby, seeing huge potential in the complex, purchased it in 1993. The Big Banana now boasts The Banana Slip Water Park (Australia's first 3 story high inflatable waterslide - the biggest in the world), Ice Skating Rink, Wild Toboggan Ride, Going Bananas Cafe, Gift and Souvenir shop, Candy Kitchen, Sunset Lakes Nursery, "The World of Bananas" multimedia theatre experience, plantation and packing shed tour and in September 2013 a state-of-the-art Laser Tag arena! We were in Woolgoolga for a weekend and passed the Big Banana on the way. Decided to pop in for a look...not much point really! Just take a look and a photo as you drive past. -Over-priced cafeteria-like food served in a grubby dining hall ($3.95 for a banana dipped in chocolate and then frozen...really??!) -Tacky, over-priced gift shop. -Filthy,... it is just a big banana next to Pacific Highway...You can have a glimpse when driving past. Had a coffee at the Cafe. It was better than expected since the cafe looked more like a food court

We paid for the movie, plantation tour and toboggan rides. They have put a lot of money in to the theatre and we found the movies entertaining and educating. The toboggan rides were an added extra. We had the frozen choc coated bananas which were nice. We enjoyed the morning and I was pleased our kids had the experience.

We enjoyed the self guided tour which consisted of a short IMAX movie and a short hologram movie, both very informative and clever, as well as a very short walk through some plantation trees. Unfortunately the longer walk to the viewing platform at the top of the plantation was closed the day we visited- having been to the Big Banana... More

My childhood memories of the big banana included a train ride around the plantation shattered that it was no longer 😃 obviously these guys have done it tough and tried to diversify the business to survive, sadly the main attraction (bananas) lose out. There is plenty to do laser tag, ice skating, tobogan rides etc our kids loved the tobogan... More

Stopped at the Big Banana on the way through Coffs. Heaps of stuff to do and a great homemade lolly shop out the back. The chocolate dipped bananas are to die for - especially the ones covered in crushed nuts. Took some fun photos and stocked up on snacks for the trip home. It's a must do on the central... More

Our family of five spent a fun morning ice skating for about $60. The rink is big, there's plenty of frames for beginners and no shortage of skates. The staff were quick to help when my son fell. Well worthwhile.

Ok, it is a giant fiberglass banana. Take your picture and wander through the gift shop, and perhaps grab a bite or an ice cream. There is an activity park behind the place and I'm sure kids would have a great time with some of the rides and attractions, but a bit boring for a group of adults. We had... More

Ordered the toasted chicken, cheese, and avocado on Turkish bread. Our family shared a bowl of the crunchy beer batter chips, and I washed down my toasted roll with a chocolate milkshake, very happy with the service and quality!

Go here if you like tasty smoothies. Has a lot of attractions for kids (laser tag etc.), but for adults, just go for the bananas!
