I am always very impressed with the collection here. Great Australian art and a surprising good collection of European and Asian art. We attended mainly for the Inca Gold special exhibit which was well presented and audio tours were available for both kids and adults which was great. At most special exhibits they also generally have a kids activity room... More

Having visited many galleries in and out of Australia I have to say that the NGA is a pretty sterile and disengaging gallery to visit. The positives are the relatively new extension to the gallery showcasing indigenous art. Well curated and gives you a comfortable viewing environment to enjoy a great breadth of work. It's also great that the permanent... More

This is a great gallery for Australia. It has many of the greats mixed with Australian artists. An abundance of minimalism and surrealism, which seemed overdone. Would have been good to see a little less and a little classics as well..

It was worthwhile going to Canberra to see the Incas Exhibition. It was good that it was opened till 8pm on the last 3 days of the Exhibition. the other works are very interesting plus all the historical artefacts. A must go place if you have at least 3 hours.

Wonderful diverse collections and an amazing Inca exhibition. My visit was planned purely because of the Inca exhibition but I was surprised by the variety of art and artefacts throughout the gallery. Many hours enjoyed at the gallery

This was a great exhibition although it has finished now. The gallery itself is very interesting and the Sculpture Garden goes right down to the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. A very pleasant place to spend a day or part thereof.

This is a pretty good gallery, 3 stores, 2 cafe and lots of interesting exhibitions. car park can full up quickly, but you can park across the road at the other "less popular" galleries :P we ran outa time, we stayed for 2 hours but still a lot more to see. will visit again and this plan at least for... If you are heading to Canberra, the national gallery is well worth a trip. It's free to enter (except for the visiting exhibitions which depending on what is showing differs in price). Check the times of the tours which interest you, they have indigenous, popular art collection and Australian art. The tours normally last between 1 hour and 1.5 hours.... More

Disclosure: we are signed-up "Friends of the Gallery" and visit fairly frequently. The NGA hosts blockbuster travelling exhibitions, and has made a specialty of providing temporary homes for works whose normal display venue is being repaired. These attract much of the attention, but its permanent collections deserve a visit anytime. My favourite is the Ned Kelly collection of Sidney Nolans... More

What's in the Gallery? Some terrific colonial and modern Aussie art, a great collection of Asian textiles and of course there is the spectacular Blue Poles. The gardens along the lakeside are lovely with that sweet smell of eucalyptus and sculptures arranged through the trees and lawns. Entry is free but there is usually a charge for major exhibitions.
