What's in the Gallery? Some terrific colonial and modern Aussie art, a great collection of Asian textiles and of course there is the spectacular Blue Poles. The gardens along the lakeside are lovely with that sweet smell of eucalyptus and sculptures arranged through the trees and lawns. Entry is free but there is usually a charge for major exhibitions. The National Gallery has a variety of exhibitions to suit many different likes. In addition to the permanent exhibitions there is usually a traveling exhibition. Well worth the visit.

I live in Canberra and I've visited the Gallery many times. It's a lovely calming space to wander and look at the exhibits. The special exhibitions can get a bit crowded even though bookings supposedly only allow maximum numbers at each time. Most recently I visited 'Gold of the Incas', which was one of the best exhibitions for a while -... More

A world class gallery which apart from a diverse collection includes iconic Australian works. The arts bookshop alone makes the visit worthwhile.

We went to Canberra to see the Gold of the Incas exhibition at the national gallery. The items themselves were very interesting and the audio commentary made it even better to understand. The only down point was the light intensity around the exhibition. It was to low and this made it difficult to see aspects of the exhibition. There was... More

I like the way everything is set out with space to walk around items and view from every angle. I particularly enjoyed the 'Masters Gallery' as you enter, with original works by Monet, Picasso, etc. The collection of ceramics included a cup and saucer set made by Kandinsky, who just happens to be my favourite artist. What a bonus!

The Gold and Incas exhibit is excellent, along with what else is available at the National Gallery Gallery.

I was seriously interested in exhibition of "Gold and the Incas". Great access via the car park and all went well until you walked into this exhibit. For most of the items on show you could not read the card describing the item on display because the card was either placed in darkness or by standing in front of the... More

I was concerned that walking could be a problem but was offered a wheelchair and staff were friendly and offered much advice. We chose to visit mid afternoon to avoid crowds and went on a Monday which worked well.

I only went to the Australian Art section (3rd gallery of the day & getting a bit tired - so not a reflection of the temporary exhibitions or other sections.) I think this gallery has blundered the very best of Australian Art in the country. Will definitely be back to see the other sections in the National Gallery. Nice cafe... More
