When in Canberra a visit to the National Portrait Gallery is a must

It is always great to visit the National Portrait Gallery. The exhibits are always good. I always make it point of going to special exhibits. The place is run exceptionally well.

We enjoyed this gallery, full of interesting paintings and a couple of good exhibitions. After an hour or so though I had had enough of portraits! It's in a handy location next to the National Gallery and near Parliament House though so you can wander between them.

This museum has a wonderful display of painted and Photographic portraits that make up a chronological history of many of the people who have made a significant contribution to the development of Australia. Not to be missed!

Having had a delightful visit to the National Gallery the week before, my three year old grandson and I visited the National Portrait Gallery. We were warmly greeted by the attendants who gave us some information. Once again the portraits in the gallery provided lots of discussion about faces- eyes, hair and especially beards. There was also discussion about the... More

Relaxing, informative and inspiring. A great day out at the gallery. Situated close to the Parliamentary Triangle, you''ll be spoiled for choice here. No need to rush, take in the portraits, read the accompanying notes and marvel at the talent, skill and inspiraton. My favourite gallery in Canberra.

I love the Portrait gallery, it never gets old. They regularly have new exhibitions and refresh their main offering. I love looking at the people, clothing and reading their stories - from early settlement on to modern times. It has an excellent cafe and interesting bookshop, with lots of art, architecture and photography books. Great place for a stroll out... More

The building is quite nice to look at, but unfortunately that's the best bit of the museum. The portraits are all good and very focused on Australians. Unless you are knowledgable about Australians or a determined history buff, it can get quite tedious reading the labels.

Fascinating exhibitions in a beautiful building. A Canberra highlight that pairs well with the National Gallery next door. Being so close to the lake is a great opportunity to picnic on sunny days too.

The building is an interesting mix of wood and concrete and surprisingly has a very tranquil atmosphere. The portraits are varied and interesting and takes you on a historical journey. I really enjoyed my time here.

This is a great gallery. The rooms are well lighted and spacious and it is easy to move around all on the one level. The exhibits have interesting biographical detail. The exhibits themselves are all wonderful and sometimes really stunning. Guy Maestri's portrait of Gurrumul Yunipingu was a stand out for me but there is a wonderful portrait of Bob... More
