Not a big art type so I wasn't sure that I'd be overly interested. The gallery is a very interesting mix of portraiture, busts etc from early settlement to now. It is put together in a way that made sense even to me from the early Tasmania Aborigine sketches to the wonderful bust of Jack Brabham. The gallery guard even... More

This museum was free, which was nice. It was very large and had a lot of items to view. You can easily spend a day in here. They had great displays of aboriginal art and a bravely honest "white Australia" racism display.

It just shows how much talent we have in this country, I especially iiked the portrait of Bob Hawke and John Howard sitting but sort of holding hands and smiling.....WOW! It says so much.

My husband and I visit the National Portrait Gallery at least 4-5 times per year, there is always something new to see. Musical entertainment is often provided on the weekends in the foyer, the quality is fantastic. There is a beautiful café serving a range of snacks and meals including healthy choices. As a bonus all this free!

Doen't really see myself as an arty person, but took my daughter to see the James Turrell Retrospective and then took the time to walk around the rest of the Gallery. We both had a enjoyable day and felt we would make great art critics by the end of it. Will definitely be going back again soon.

We are much-travelled residents of Canberra, and would rate the NPG as an excellent attraction, The building itself is unpretentious and thoroughly enjoyable and the collection is superb. Our interest is in the contemporary collection, and on each visit we discover something new - something not seen on a previous visit. You may end up disappointed if you try to... More

The National Portrait Gallery is always worth a visit if you are in Canberra. The changing exhibitions are very interesting. The current National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition is diverse and dynamic. The permanent collection in the gallery is exciting from both an artistic as well as historical perspective. The bookshop is interesting and the café is good quality. There are... More

Great paintings of Australian Icons and some of the best photographs I have seen. This Gallery is a little hard to navigate to find the displays you want to see, but the gallery staff are very helpful.
