Lots of great portraits, some you know and some you don't but it is good that they have a bit of blurb alongside for you to get to know who the folk are. Worth a detour for a look.

The National Portrait Gallery is a relatively small modern building, located in the Parliamentary Triangle close to the High Court, National Gallery and not far from the Old Parliament House and National Library. It houses an interesting collection of old and modern paintings, photographs and sculptures...which are...as the name suggests...'portraites' of a wide range of Australians. Its not so much... More

Visiting the Portrait Gallery is like taking a trip through a history of familiar and not so familiar personalities. I particularly loved the gallery dedicated to women. There are some large, impressive canvases and photos in there. Deborah Mailman's portrait is my favourite. It was not crowded when I visited in the afternoon on a Friday. The light and space... This is a wonderful place to visit. Depictions of great Australians -- and sometimes the not quite so great -- grace the walls. The gallery provides an overview of the history of Australia, from Captain Cook to the present. Sometimes careful study of a painting tells you all about the subject. Other portraits are less obvious, and you need to... More

Went into this gallery on the way to something else and was so glad we did. Some beautiful art work of some amazing people! The little story next to each portrait was a bonus too, gave a fuller experience. Look out for Dr Brown and the green old time waltz by Harold Thornton, you could look for ages at it.... More

What a wonderful space for all of us to enjoy, ponder, reflect & admire the contribution of these Australians. A truly great way to spend hours.

This is a great gallery. The permanent collection and special exhibitions are the equal of the world's best, but this is so much more. This collection provides a graphic and comprehensive picture ( excuse the pun) of Australia's history. From that perspective it is also a fabulous museum. A must see both for tourists who want to see great art... More

A magnificent showcase not only of portraiture, but also of Australian history and the place individuals play in it. The National Portrait Gallery is a magnificent and changing collection, including the most modern of portrait styles. Make sure you see the "portrait" of Bob Brown which is a magnificent interpretation of the fight to save the Franklin River - I've... More
