Etal Castle is a ruined Medieval fortification in the charming village of Etal, Northumberland and overseen by English heritage. Whilst essentially a ruin, the site is well worth a visit because of its history. Furthermore, it's set in magnificent surroundings. There are interpretation boards on-site to help your understanding of the ruins in front of you. The museum is excellent,... More

Unfortunately it was closed when we went in March but we managed to walk around the pretty village. There is a train which takes you to another village but this was also not open.

This castle was built in 14th century in a strategic spot near a ford across the River Till close to the Scottish border. It was captured by James IV of Scotland in 1513 before his utter defeat at the Battle of Flodden (a tragic atmospheric place to visit). In the Visitor Centre there is an interesting exhibition which will no... More

Nice little Castle in a beautiful village. Some display boards to read which explains why the castle stands here. Enjoyed our visit as it was a nice autumn day. Entry price seems a bit high we only visited as we are English Heritage members.

Good exhibition and castle. A short walk to narrow gauge railway to heatherslaw mill. A favourite place to visit. Etal village has the only (I think) thatched pub in the area!

Couldn't figure out where the entry was at, so I only got to see the castle from the outside. I loved that is was still intact for as much that it was- just wish I could have seen more of the inside. If you go- be sure to stop at The Black Bull pub just down the road which is... More

We first visited Etal Castle last year (2013). For so many years we walked past having just got off the Heatherslaw Light Railway and never went in (for me my aim was to get to the Lavender Tea Room for a Cream Tea!) It is English Heritage - so it's free for members otherwise there is a small charge. The... More

The site is introduced by an excellent museum with very clear descriptions of the history of the castle. The battle of Flodden was fought nearby and the illustrations showed us the horrors of war most graphically. Visit Flodden battle sight before this castle to get a real feel of things.

If you are in the area take a walk down to the castle, it may be in ruins but it is such a beautiful area down by the riverside. If you have children get on the minature railway that runs along the riverside to a working flour mill.
