We visited the boat lift but did not take the excursion. The staff were very helpful, particularly as I doubt they get many English speaking visitors. We visited at a quiet time, so they put the English version of the film on for us. Quite impressed by the work involved in its construction. On leaving. the boat lift was in... More

When interested in technical marvels in big dimensions Strepy-Thieu shouldn´t be missed. We took a full day from Brussels to the beautiful landscape of Hainaut Province to make a little journey through time seeing historic Canal du Centre with the old boat lifts still functioning, the sloping boat lift in Ronquières and the boat lift at Strepy-Thieu. From the parking... More

Sopped here as a short side trip while driving to Germany. The lift itself is a true engineering marvel, well worth seeing. I was there for approximately an hour and saw two boats lifted and lowered during that time, but what you see depends on boar traffic of course. It was interesting to see the process from up inside the... More

If you like to see engineering masterpiece then I guarantee that you will not be disappointed. The tallest boat lift in the world is in one of the smallest countries in the world. Magnificent landscape seen from the top on a sunny day. Definitely worth a visit.

This is an impressive and accessible civil and mechanical engineering project. The installation lifts and lowers 1350 ton vessels through a height of 73 meters, from one canal to another. The operations are fascinating for old and young. In the building there are interactive displays practically demonstrating some of the engineering principles, again both old and young enjoy participating. The... More

When I saw the building first time from distance, it reminded me on Star Wars - it is huge and looks strange at first sight. But when we stood next to it, it was so impressive to see how the vessels are lifted and what an enormous weight is being moved! There is a visitor center inside and you can... More

Interesting visit, with the boat that takes you up or down (see timetable on their internet site) with the famous lift. + exhibition on the top floor of the tower = very well done as well. Get the combined ticket at the entrance. We did not take it at the start thinking we would not want to see it after... More
