Just happened to choose to stay near Bourtange on the weekend of a medieval re-enactment. Entertaining and very well presented. Even on a quiet day I'm sure it would be a very interesting place to visit.

My husband's friend took us here by surprise when we visited him in Gronigen. It was on our Places to visit in The Netherlands "bucket list." There are little shops, places to eat, and relax all around. I was very surprised to find out that people LIVE in the houses inside the fort. I thought they were actors at first.... More

This is a well developed tourist attraction and would probably be great to stay there for the night but we just cycled through and spent an hour or so there. Plenty of buildings to see and the wall to walk around as well as cafes and bars for food. Much has been reconstructed but gives you a feel for the... More

I was there on a Sunday in August, and although it has been busy it never felt overcrowded. There was parking space (for free), and enough seating in the restaurants or simply on benches to watch some spectacle or other (occasional canon fire or some sort of play - my knowledge of the language wasn't sufficiant to understand most of... Great place to stop off and relax for a few days, Drenthe and the hunbedden close by. Bourtange much quieter at night with good food and atmosphere, deservedly an unesco wh site

We visited Bourtange in July and was greeted with a very warm and friendly atmosphere in a historical setting that has been meticulous renovated to its former glory by locals and volunteers. For all interested in historical surroundings and those interested in attractions that have yet to be discovered Bourtange has my best recommendations.

Bourtange fortress is such an important part of Dutch history. It was first conceived by William of Orange as a symbol of Dutch military might. This rebuilt reconstruction provides a step back in time. The video was a little dated but very informative Also very important is the little synagogue. All of the Jewish members were taken by the Nazis... More

When you visit Bourtange it's hard to imagine that it has only been reconstructed a few decennia ago. A great way to see a real Vauban-style fortess.

This town used to be an entrance gate from Holland to other countries though a marshy like area. The fortified walls are interesting, to be sure. But also the old homes and shops which are now like a museum.

this is such a nice place. one of the most beautifull little places in Europe. And not far from Bourtange you can find Oudeschans. Even smaler then Bourtange, but so nice. Go to Bourtange en Oudeschans. Walk around this beautifull little villages and you will never forget this.
