We visited over Christmas. The park was quiet. The big spectacle was the roost site for the Griffon Vultures with easy viewing. Great for kids and adults alike. Go to the visitors centre for information and stay at the park camp-site. The camp-site is open all year and has good facilities.

Took a detour here travelling from Salamanca to Cacares. A must do if you are in the area. Started with a short visit to the new tourist centre (some bits still under construction) at Villarreal de San Carlos on the EX-208 road. Very helpful with a few bits in English including a map. Then went on to one of many... More

Pena Falcon, the Castle, the Bridge over Targus River and Portilla del Tietar are the best places for birding but the hole area is really good.

Fantastic natural park , renowned for its chance to see birds of prey at close quarters. You can drive through the main areas of the park and stop at the viewpoints. Most well known is Salto del Gitano where Griffon Vultures sit on the rocks close to the road. Also chance to see rare Black Vulture and Spanish imperial eagle.... More

We pulled here on route from Madrid to Caceres. We'd brought some supplies at Navalmoral on the way for a picnic lunch. After stopping at the info centre we then went onto the lookout a couple of kilometres south of the bridge (sorry can't remember the name of the spot). As others have said its great for bird watching and... More

Extremadura is one of the best birding locations in Europe. At it's heart is Monfrague National Park. Based around the village of Villareal de San Carlos the national park includes many sites of interest to birders and non birders alike. They include Pena Falcon and Monfrague Castle, and many others. As a keen birder the whole area seems to be... More

The Salto del Gitano is the place to stop, get out the binoculars and cameras and just watch the amazing bird life - mostly Griffon vultures but other species too. There is space for car-parking and plenty of space on the path for groups of bird watchers.
