The Salto del Gitano is the place to stop, get out the binoculars and cameras and just watch the amazing bird life - mostly Griffon vultures but other species too. There is space for car-parking and plenty of space on the path for groups of bird watchers.

We were up early and drove to the foot of the hill leading to Castillo, and then walked up. We were the only people around and had brilliant views in all directions, and Griffin Vultures gliding past us, above and below, and right alongside. Spectacular!

We passed through the National Park on our trip from Trujillo to the Monastero of Yuste. There are plenty of picnic places to stop and to enjoy the scenery. The number of birds of prey circling is impressive. It is defenitely worth a visit, even for non specialists.

Incredible scenery and bird life. We booked a trip with the tourist office - it was run by Birding in Extremadura, and the guide took us around in a 4x4, including off road areas that people travelling on their own can't visit. He had a telescope and binoculars, and got me some spectacular photos using my camera attached to his... More

We visited Monfrague in late April, having seen a short segment on the vultures on a David Attenborough program, and then realising that this was going to be quite close to where we were headed in Spain. To make it clear from the start, we are not birdwatchers! However, this was one of the absolute highlights of our visit to... More

There is one main road through the park, intersected by a visitor centre with cafes and toilets, be sure not to miss the second half, people sometimes think that the centre is it. Take a picnic, there are lots of places to stop and refresh yourselves whilst watching the magnificent bird life. There are lots of excellent viewing points, just... More

We just started our interest in birding and having read other reviews we just had to go. Egyptian vultures and imperial eagles soared above the gorgeous confluence of two rivers and large craggy monoliths. Either from Trujillo or Caceres a reasonable drive puts you up close and personal with multitudes of raptors and outstanding scenery. The view from the Castillo... More

We did an 8 k walk through Monfrague recently. Not a walking path for the timid but not too onerous. Some of the scenery was interesting but around midday there wasn't too much fauna about. On the drive out we stopped at a spot where you could see vultures nesting and flying past quite close. That was terrific. The information... More

The birds and animals and the bird-watchers. The scenery on the bus trip from Trujillo to Caceres. The vultures and Eagles and glimpses of hunters.
