We were in the area and the opportunity to look around an old lighthouse was too good to miss. The lighthouse has lots of interesting displays and the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. The steps to the top of the lighthouse are very steep and might present a problem for those who aren't surefooted. But worth the effort with... More

Just north of Sunderland and Whitburn. Well sign posted. £6.50 seems a bit steep for non-members. This should be a unique experience but non of the staff were in place to explain rooms etc other than the one person at the top of the lighthouse.(from which there are excellent views up and down the coast) I discovered the others all... The National Trust looks after this historically significant establishment. It's educational for kids and interesting for the parents. Occasional guided tours explain the role of this lighthouse and its contribution to local society. At the top of the lighthouse you can wander next to the enormous light, and learn about its power and workings. The cafe is functional and friendly... More

So many places to visit along the North Eastern Coast of England this is one to visit. A historic building which is a favourite attraction.

Visited here on a rainy day. Rushed into the cafe first to warm up. The two ladies serving were very helpful and I decided to try the 'Panackelty and stottie' - a local dish (a slow cooked one pot dish of corned beef and root vegetables served with bread). It was fantastic!!! Worth visiting for that alone! Then, I went... More

I gather the four people working in the cafe are volunteers, either way the trust want to pay for proper staff who can actually serve customers or retrain this shower. On entering we were meet by a queue of seven people in front of us. No problem I think there's four staff, shouldn't be that long, but I should have... More

It's absolutely beautiful to look at I spent a while photographing it. I believe you can inside but I didn't have the time. Would recommend a trip to go see it
