The place is beautiful, peaceful, the panorama from the Hermitage is exceptional to the lake. The guards were helpful, offered to take photos from 4 of us. We visited in February with mild fog and snowy peaks were at the backround mountains. A kolostor és a környék csodálatos, meghitt és békés hangulatú. A kilátás a tóra és a hegyekre gyönyörű.... More

Well, not that crowded, relative to Rome, but certainly it would a appear a favourite of the tourist coach. No cost to enter and the hermitage / chappels are very well preserved. Would make for a great boat trip from the other side of the lake (say Stresa).

We were staying in Laveno Mombello and a man at the supermarket recommended that we visit here and I'm so glad we did. We were able to drive there easily and there was ample parking in the free carpark. This location is just lovely and the restoration of the buildings is very well done. I enjoyed learning more about the... More

Another lucky stop on our drive through the Lake Region. Unbelievable 12th century hermitage built along the cliffs of Lago di Maggiore. Also a ferry stop to Stressa. Elevator access although the stairs provide a great work-out. Very well maintained. Would highly recommend visiting.

This place is pretty cool. It's hard to imagine life here...A lot of the original frescos and things like the olive press are still there despite vandalism and abandonment...Really neat spiritual place and kind of sets the pace for life in that area...Loved it! Will go back. Oh and be careful about the "scalpers", for lack of a better word,... More

An impressive 12th century chapel and hermitage. These are spectacular buildings as they are carved into the side of the mountain overlooking the lake. There are beautiful frescos. We took a ferry from Stresa. Check the opening times before you go.

On our way from Lago Maggiore to Lugano we stopped here. The chapel is fantastic with lots of fresco. It's very well maintained. The view of the lake is spectacular. You can go down by the escalator (1euro per adult) or taking the staircase. Check opening hours before going.

Hermitage carved into the side of the mountain, really peculiar if you see it from the lake. Can be reached from the parking lot above descending the panoramic 268-step staircase or climb approximately 80 steps up from the lake. Very nice atmosphere.

Beautiful place, and to be honest I already was there several times before. I know that place through casafiori.nl, where we stayed for B&B, and that is near to S. Caterina and other nice places. I prefer to go up the stairs at S Caterina to enjoy the beautiful view of the Lago Maggiore. Michel

Easier to arrive by boat as on side of rock face and steep steps down from the carpark. Steps up from ferry dock much less. Fresos looked very old and were beautiful. Chapel has lovely stained glass windows. We had a day rover ticket for the ferry so didn't cost any extra for the trip over here and I'm not... More
