A visit to Athlone is not complete without visiting Irelands oldest pub. Good buzz and athmosphere about. The front part of the pub is the old traditional end but it goes way back to a busy beer garden with a dj playing.!!! A little unexpected but we had a fun night dancing away. Huge crowds.

I was in the beer garden area with a gang of friends watching fantastic live music by Amazing Apples. The staff were lovely and helpful, the beer was plentiful, great crowd, great atmosphere, great location and even a few old locals still drinking at the bar.

On a coach trip & had a free couple of hours to spend in Athlone & having heard of Sean's Bar we decided to calll in. It's a fascinating place, full of old relics & pictures with part of the original wall on display. The pub allegedly dates back to 900 AD. We didn't have time for a meal but... More

Sean's Bar in Athlone is recognized as the oldest pub in Ireland, and some say in Europe, being in continuous operation since 900 AD. The decor is definitely not that old, but is not the sterile stone and chrome atmosphere of a modern bar. Quite an interesting place to put down a pint or two. Worth the stop, just to... More

There are literally dozens of pubs claiming to be "the oldest pub" all over Ireland including Sean's Bar, Athlone.....whether or not it is the oldest it doesn't really matter as it's a very nice traditional pub with a great atmosphere; traditional music 7 nights per week & great craic at all times. There is a large outside area where there's... More

Kind of crazy being in a pub that was established in 900 AD. The pub itself is like many others; but, it is great thing to do. Track down the Book of World's Records cert.

We went into Athlone by taxi to visit Sean's bar and it was a very nice bar to watch the world go by, in and out of the place. There was sawdust on the floor and a lovely fire. And the guinness went down a treat, so well we had another round! As we were staying at the Hodson Bay... More

We stopped by for a drink around 9 and it was too crowded to sit or stand inside so we went out to the patio. While it was pleasant out there - heaters, tables, chairs - the live music could only be hear inside so we missed out on that part of the experience, listening instead to pop music.
