Bantry House and Garden is a stately home in southwest Ireland situated right on Bantry Bay with panoramic views of the bay and the caha mountains. The estate is owned by Egerton and Brigitte Shelswell-White and is managed by their daughter Sophie and her partner Josh. It has been in the family since the 1700s. The house contains original furniture and objects d'art. The garden is laid out over 7 terraces with a fountain, large wisteria circle and 100 steps leading up to the woodland. The house, garden and tearoom is open to the public daily from easter to october. The estate hosts weddings, music festivals and fairs. We have a separate review page for our B&B accommodation.

We didn't go into the house, but thoroughly enjoyed the grounds which are delightful. Everything is so lush, you can almost watch it growing! Do make the effort to go up to the top terraces and then the woodland walk. We didn't see anyone else up there and the shrubs are glorious.

I'm a sucker for manor houses and castles and this one did not disappoint. Lovely state rooms and large - yet homey - library that overlooks the gardens, which are spectacular. The house is still owned by the wife of the Earl (who passed away a few years ago) and we met her and other members of the family as... More

This is a really beautiful place which sits on the banks of Bantry Bay. We visited the well maintained gardens, had a very tasty lunch and then took the organised tour of the house. The lady who conducted the tour is actually the owner of the house and estate. She is so well informed on the history of the house... More

The grounds here are amazing. Beautiful gardens, and stunning backdrop of Bantry Bay make this a must do if you are in the area. A modest admission, but worth the visit. The stairs seem daunting as there are 100 of them, however it is well worth the climb if you are up to it as the pictures from here are... More

We had a fabulous day walking around the Estate admiring the beautiful formal gardens. The view over Bantry Bay is exceptional and even more impressive from the top of the hundred steps through the different levels of gardens at the back of the House. We were shown around the house by a member of the family which still owns the... More

We went to the tea room for tea and homemade, melt-in-the-mouth biscuits. And a little around the lush, beautiful gardens. The house is stunning to just stand and look at; the gardens, with a magnificent sea view, are incredible.

A wonderful old house in a stunning location at the head of Bantry Bay. Full of memorabilia and antiques belonging to the family who lived lived there for six(?) generations. Come soon, the family are having difficulties maintaining the fabric of the biuilding and it is slowly deteriorating while they attempt to raise funds selling some of the contents.

Dear diandjj thank you for your review and for visiting. We are working very hard to maintain the entire estate and the proposed auction was cancelled last year. We hope to continue having the house open for visits, events and B&B without having to sell off our important collection. Thank you again, Sophie Shelswell-White, Bantry House More

Although the admisson fees were not that attractive, the offered guided visit was worth it. It informs us about the history of the house and the family who has been living here for some centuries now. A great place to learn a bit about Irish history and to relax!

Went here with friends but we did not go into the House, we found the views and gardens stunning, looking across the water to Whiddy Island is possible from the gardens.

This is a great tour of an old house with a tremendous history. But what is interesting about it is that you see what began to happen to the old houses when there was no longer a fortune available to maintain them. It's as if you can see the layers. Some areas and surfaces are restored and some are not.... More
